British youngster Ben Lowe scored his first senior goal as Hull Stingrays beat Edinburgh Capitals 10-2 at Hull Arena in the Elite League.

Stingrays were again without Lee Mitchell (knee) while Matt Davies was also absent. But Aivars Gaisins returned to the line-up after a shoulder injury.

Lee Esders put Stingrays ahead in the sixth minute with a tap-in before Jason Silverthorn scored a wrap-around effort – his 100th goal in the Elite League era and also the team’s 400th at home.

Jozef Sladok’s wrist shot made it 3-0 by the end of the first period although Jeff Hutchins pulled a goal back for Capitals 61 seconds into the middle session.

Drew Bannister and Craig Mitchell – his first goal of the season – also netted before short-handed markers from Silverthorn and Jereme Tendler inside 18 seconds, on the same penalty kill, made it 7-1.

Capitals grabbed their second of the night when Iain Bowie produced a neat finish on the same powerplay but with 16 seconds of the period left, Matti Uusivirta notched his first goal in 11 games.

At the start of the third period, both teams changed netminders with Andy Jaszczyk taking over from Christian Boucher and Brandon Stones replacing Craig Holland.

Esders grabbed his second goal of the game before Lowe, who turned 20 on Thursday, wrapped up the scoring with two minutes left.

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier said: “We did what we had to do.

“Edinburgh are going through a tough time and we wanted to be respectful, we didn’t want to embarrass them. Our focus was getting the two points and that’s what we did.

“It was great to see Ben Lowe get his first professional goal, of the 10 goals it was the only one we celebrated as that was a big moment for him.

“Ben had a lot of ice time as did the likes of Lee Esders and Ryan Lake. They had a chance to express themselves and it was good to see the points shared around the team.”
