Excel Hull Stingrays snapped a seven-game winless streak by registering a 3-2 victory over Fife Flyers at Hull Arena in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League.

Stingrays bossed the first period, out-shooting Flyers 21-6, but could not find a way past goaltender Garrett Zemlak, who again was in top form.

Zemlak was finally beaten when Dominic Osman fired Stingrays ahead in the 29th minute with Derek Campbell picking up his 200th all-time competitive assist in the Elite League era.

The home side then suffered a blow when defenceman Dmitry Rodin – back in the line-up in place of Frantisek Bakrlik - was forced out of the game with a knee problem.

Flyers levelled shortly afterwards through Matt Siddall but two quickfire markers from Jason Silverthorn (powerplay) and Jereme Tendler gave Stingrays a two-goal cushion with six minutes left.

Danny Stewart (powerplay) grabbed a goal back for Flyers but despite pulling Zemlak, they could not force overtime.

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier said: “It was a massive win for us. We needed to get that feeling back of winning games and finding a way to win games.

“The guys kept plugging away all night and to have nearly 60 shots on goal it shows you we dominated. But to have to give credit to their goalie – I think he is the best goalie in the league.

“I am proud of the guys and we have to get ready for another tough week.”

Cloutier is also keeping his fingers crossed over Rodin, who went to hospital for a check-up on his knee injury.

He added: “We are getting him checked out. There is no swelling on the knee so hopefully that is a good sign.”

Stingrays take on Braehead Clan at Hull Arena in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League on Sunday November 27 (6pm face-off). Tickets can be purchased by ringing the Hull Arena Box Office on 01482 325252.
