A  physical performance from Blackburn Hawks on Sunday night never allowed Billingham Stars to get into their game. The Hawks took full advantage in the first, and were 3 goals up in the first 16 minutes, Billingham were unable to find an answer until they hit a consolation effort 8 minutes from time.

Hawks opened after 6 minutes through Rick Hughes from within a goal mouth scramble, forced the puck under Flavell in the Billingham goal. A string of three 2 minute penalty’s for Blackburn put the Stars on the power play, however the Stars were unable to convert an within 30 seconds of the Hawks getting back to full strength the Hawks doubled their haul through Tom King who fired home a nice goal from the slot.

With Billingham looking hesitant in attack and defence, Hawks player coach Jared Owen concluded a miserable period for the Stars as he shot home a rebound to give the Hawks 3 unanswered goals.

Early in the second the Stars enjoyed a very brief 5 on 3 power play, but were unable to open their account.

The game started to boil over following a goal keeper interference call against Stars skipper Paul Windridge, the Hawks goalie Danny Brittle retaliated with his stick against the Stars forward, some punches were thrown, and Billingham’s Dave Thomas went to the aid of his skipper, when the dust settled Windridge collected a 2 minute interference call, Thomas a 10 minute misconduct call, with Hawks goalie Brittle taking a 2 + 10 for roughing.

At the halfway mark Blackburn’s discipline went into meltdown, a tripping call against Robert Steetly combined with a 10 minute misconduct against Chris Arnone, was topped off with a dangerously low hit on Stars James Moss, by Hawks Scott Glover.
A reaction to the hit by Stars Scott Ward earned him a 10 minute misconduct, and Glover took an early shower with a match penalty for clipping.
Hawks coach Jared Owen found himself in the penalty box with a 10 minute misconduct. The Hawks sin bin was becoming noticeably crowded as Matthew Viney found standing room only with a 2 minute cross checking call, then as the period closed Hawks Aaron Davies picked up a 2 minute high sticking call.

With the Stars having come to life and outshooting the Hawks by 16 shots to 4. The second closed with Hawks holding on to a 3 – 0 score line.

The final session got underway with the Stars on a 5 on 3 power play, but they were again unable to convert their advantage.
After numerous unfruitful power plays, the Stars opened with a short handed goal. A Richie Thornton pass through to Cal Davies, who skated onto the Hawks goal before turning his back to goal to protect his possession, he dropped the biscuit back to Anthony Price who blasted a one timer to deny Brittle his shut out.

A relatively penalty free third ensued and Billingham pushed forward looking for goal, James Flavell in the Stars goal denied the Hawks on three occasions as the Lancastrians broke out on counter attacks.

At 57.21 the Stars called a time out and opted to play the last 2.39 without a goalie, as play resumed the Hawks were short handed, so the Stars took possession in the Blackburn zone with a 6 on 4 power play. The Stars turned up the heat but were unable to beat Brittle in the Hawks goal and the clock counted down to a 3-1 win for the Blackburn Hawks. Daniel Brittle collected Man of the Match for Blackburn with Adam Robinson collecting the Billingham award.

Bombers coaches Terry Ward and Stephen Foster were both disappointed with the Stars performance.

After the game Terry Ward conceded

“We were still on the bus in the first period, we increased the pressure in the second and third but our power plays tonight let us down, it’s ironic that after all those power plays, our only goal was scored shorthanded”.

“We delivered the puck to the front of the goal plenty of times but never found a quality finish”.

Stephen Foster added

“We were missing some players, but we still had three more players than Blackburn, they out muscled us and gave us a very physical game, and we failed to respond”.

With Whitley Warriors picking up four points this weekend, they have cut Stars lead to 5 points at the top of ENL One North. The stage is set for a crucial top of the league clash this weekend as Whitley Warriors visit Billingham’s TFM Ice Arena on Sunday night face off 18:30.
