A nightmare second period saw Coventry Blaze’s 12-match winning run in the Elite League come to an end with a 7-5 defeat to Edinburgh Capitals in Murrayfield.

Coventry raced into a two-goal lead inside nine minutes thanks to strikes from Dan Carlson and Owen Fussey, with Greg Chambers notching his 400th point in Elite League competition with an assist on the second.

Nick Fanto pulled one back for Capitals on the powerplay only for Brad Cruikshank to restore Coventry’s two-goal cushion within 91 seconds.

However, five second-period goals by Capitals totally transformed the game as Chris St Jacques netted twice before three goals inside two minutes from Neil Hay, Jacques Perreault (powerplay) and Alex Kim left Coventry - who out-shot the hosts 20-11 during that session - reeling.

Jason Robinson (powerplay) cut the deficit to two with his first goal on his return to Coventry but Adam Taylor notched Edinburgh’s seventh.

Russell Cowley did net a short-handed marker with five minutes left but it was not enough as Coventry - who outshot Capitals 49-23 - went down to a second successive loss following their Challenge Cup reverse to Hull Stingrays on Sunday.

Coach Paul Thompson said: “I am shell-shocked, we were abysmal in that second period.

“We were in full control on four occasions but turned the puck over when we were trying to beat one of their guys and we gave up two-on-ones, breakaways...

“That second period was a carbon copy of the third against Hull on Sunday. No-one took responsibility on one-on-one situations. It was a comedy of errors. There is no hiding from it, we are going to have to go right back to basics.

“When you score five goals on the road it should be enough to win the game.”

Coventry must now regroup ahead of a make-or-break Challenge Cup tie at Nottingham Panthers on Saturday, with defeat seeing them exit the competition.

Thompson added: “I bet they are licking their lips. We will see what we are made of won’t we? There is nowhere to hide on Saturday.”
