Blaze go head to head with Vipers

Table topping Coventry Blaze face one of their toughest weekends of the season with two games against the in form Newcastle Vipers, on the road on Saturday and then back at the Coventry Skydome on Sunday night (face off 6pm).

A highly entertaining 6-3 win against the Edinburgh Capitals at the Skydome last Saturday saw Blaze return to the top of the Elite League standings but the result came at a high price with defenceman, Tom Watkins picking up a knee injury to see him join the growing Blaze casualty list.

With Jason Robinson still not fully fit and Tom Ledgard still some way from returning to the ice, Blaze were further rocked on Sunday morning with the news that GB forward, Greg Owen had been taken into hospital with appendicitis which required surgery.

Losing both Watkins and Owen has left Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson concerned ahead of the weekend’s battles.  “It’s a nightmare right now, but it’s something we just have to deal with and work through.  I’m hoping that Robinson will be fit in time for the weekend and that will help a lot if he is.  The rest of the guys will just have to work even harder and if they play the way I know they can, we have a good chance of still being top after the weekend’s games.  It’s not going to be easy though as Newcastle are a very good and in form side.”

After Tuesday’s training session GB international forward Greg Chambers agreed, “It’s going to be a tough weekend, but we’ve all seen how Thommo wants to approach these games and we know our roles. We’ll be working hard this week to bridge the gaps and show how we can cope with being players down.”

Two points is all that separates the two sides and with there being little between the sides at the top, Thompson knows the importance of these games. “With Nottingham, Belfast and Newcastle all in a position take the top spot if we fail to perform, we really need the four points this weekend.”

Tickets for Sunday’s game are available now from the box office on 02476 630693 or by booking online at www.coventryblaze.co.uk.  They can also be purchased on the door on the night of the game.  Tickets are priced at £15 for adults, £7 for under 16’s, £10 for NUS Extra card holders and OAP’s and there is a 2 adult/2 child family ticket available for £38.  The game starts at 6pm and doors open at 5pm.
