Blaze hit Capitals for six
Owen Fussey and Greg Owen scored two goals apiece as Coventry Blaze made it eight Elite League wins in a row with a 6-2 triumph over Edinburgh Capitals at the Skydome.
Blaze, on a high after Sunday’s 2-0 home victory over leaders Belfast Giants, made a barnstorming start as they raced into a two-goal lead inside three minutes.
First Robert Farmer, snapped up earlier this month from Ottawa 67’s of the Ontario Hockey League, grabbed his first goal for the club after 148 seconds and just 19 seconds later Fussey made it two with his 14th strike of the campaign.
Blaze stretched their lead further in the ninth minute with a short-handed marker from Owen – his eighth of the season – with Farmer serving a tripping penalty.
But Capitals pulled a goal back in the 17th minute with a short-handed effort themselves as Adam Taylor fired past Brett Jaeger.
Sean Selmser then put Blaze 4-1 up after 33 minutes and although Taylor netted his second of the match just 69 seconds later, Fussey ensured the home side went into the second interval with a three-goal cushion with a powerplay marker.
Owen registered the only score of the final period to condemn Capitals to their sixth successive away defeat.
Coach Paul Thompson said: “It was a good, professional performance.
“We had a really good first period, it was probably as good as we have skated and we moved the puck well.
“The second period was filled with penalties and a bit stop-start but we got the job done.
“The one thing we haven’t been doing is starting games with the level of intensity of Blaze teams in the past but in the last couple of games we have done that. We had that crispness and sharpness about us which can sometimes be missing in a midweek game.”
