Coventry Blaze posted their first win over Nottingham Panthers this season as they claimed a 2-1 victory in a bad-tempered Elite League affair at the Skydome.

Blaze scored the only goal of a feisty first period when Sean Selmser grabbed his 10th marker of the season in the sixth minute.

But the game exploded in the 28th minute with a bench clearance by both teams which resulted in a lengthy delay and 191 penalty minutes being dished out by referee Tom Darnell.

When the situation had calmed down, Darnell assessed two match penalties for Coventry forward Brad Cruikshank for an obscene gesture and excessive roughness.

Blaze goaltender Brett Jaeger was also handed a match penalty for leaving his goal to have a fight while Panthers duo Guillaume Lepine and Alex Penner were ejected on match penalties for excessive roughness and they also received a bench match penalty.

Panthers goaltender Craig Kowalski failed to return after the fracas and was replaced by back-up Dan Green while Tom Murdy took over from Jaeger for Coventry.

When play resumed, Blaze then had defenceman Brad Zanon thrown out of the game for abuse of official.

But Blaze doubled their advantage in the 45th minute when Dan Carlson registered his eighth goal of the season.

Panthers pulled a goal back with six minutes left with a David Clarke powerplay marker but despite pulling Green they could not find an equaliser.

Coach Paul Thompson said: “Our goalie [Jaeger] went down hurt in the warm-up, Panthers saw that and had a game plan to get in his face and unsettle him at every opportunity.

“They made contact with him three or four times, the goalie interference rule was not used and the referee did not give him any protection.

“It was so obvious what they were trying to do and then Shanker saw the red mist and the whole thing kicked off.

“It was an eventful night but the bottom line is we got the win and they are two huge points for us. We had been 0 and 2 with Panthers this season and we had to pull that back.

“We already had a big rivalry with Nottingham but it was taken to another level.”

Blaze are back in action tomorrow night when they face Newcastle Vipers in the Elite League without Cruikshank and Jaeger, who are banned, and defenceman Matt Soderstrom through injury.
