Blaze run ends as Devils gain revenge

Coventry Blaze saw their eight-game winning streak come to an end as they suffered a 5-2 defeat to Cardiff Devils in a feisty Challenge Cup encounter at the Skydome.
After a 7-2 victory in South Wales 24 hours earlier, Blaze made an excellent start when Luke Fulghum fired them ahead after just 57 seconds for his eighth goal of the season.
But Max Birbraer (powerplay) levelled for Devils in the ninth minute before the first of three fights with Sean Selmser (Coventry) and Ryan Finnerty (Cardiff) going toe-to-toe.
Birbraer then put Devils ahead and Jon Pelle (powerplay) handed them a two-goal cushion with the only goal of the second session.
Pelle added two further powerplay markers inside the first four minutes of the final period to put Devils in control but frustrations boiled over as Rob Farmer (Coventry) and Tylor Michel (Cardiff) and Jeff Smith (Coventry) and Justin Sawyer (Cardiff) came to blows.
Fulghum netted his second of the night with eight minutes left but the win for Devils moved them back to the top of Group B.
Coach Paul Thompson said: “There are no excuses, they outplayed us and outworked us. We scored four powerplay goals last night but we took some bad penalties and they scored four on us tonight.
“They played like a team who were doing everything to stay in the competition while we played like a team who thought we had already gone through. I am disappointed because we didn’t play anything close to our potential. I am not happy with the performance and after our recent run we have come crashing back down to earth.”
