The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Coventry Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson has this morning confirmed that he has completed the signing of Canadian defenceman, Chris Allen from the Edinburgh Capitals until the end of the season.
The hugely experienced, 6’3” blueliner has played in the NHL, the AHL, the UHL, the ECHL, the Asian League and several of the top leagues in Europe and joins the Blaze having previously iced in 18 games for the Capitals this season, where he recorded 3 goals in a 9 point total.
After a highly successful Ontario Hockey League career with the Kingston Frontenacs where he won the OHL Defenceman of the Year award in 97/98, Allen was drafted in the third round of the 1996 NHL Entry draft by the Florida Panthers and went on to play twice in the best league in the world. Allen, who will wear the number 53 shirt, will go straight into the line up this weekend.
The thirty-one year old can’t wait to get back on the ice with his new team mates :-
“I'm extremely happy to be joining the Coventry Blaze!! I didn't get the opportunity to play against the Blaze while I was in Edinburgh but I've heard great things about both the team and organization. I'm just looking forward to coming to one of the top teams in the league and an elite organisation.
“Since I left Edinburgh I’ve been living in Solihull with my fiancée and I’ve just been hoping that an opportunity would come along with the Blaze. I’ve had other opportunities to go back to Europe or home to North America but I wanted to wait as long as I could to see if something came up with Coventry. There was only so long that I could wait though so the timing of this is great. It’s a perfect fit for me and I will do all I can to make a big contribution, both on and off the ice.”
Thompson added that the addition of Allen is just the boost his team needs ahead of a massive weekend with two games against the league leading Belfast Giants.
“It’s no secret that we’ve had a nightmare time with injuries over the last few weeks and then when we got the hammer blow that Matt Soderstrom had broken his toe in practice and would be out for up to six weeks, I was left with just three regular defencemen.
“The guys we’ve had left on the ice have done an amazing job but you can’t sustain the intensity with so few bodies out there – however committed they are to the cause - so I really needed to bring someone in to help us out.
“I’m delighted to have been able to pick up a player of Chris’s ability and experience to help us through this period and going forward. When everyone is back fit and healthy, with the addition of Chris, we’re going to have great competition for places and responsibilities.
“He’s skating with us for the first time this morning and he’s going to have some hard work to do over the next few days to get his timing and his legs going. He’s not been on the ice for a month since leaving Edinburgh so it will take him a little time to get back up to speed.”
Thompson also confirmed that he has brought in two way contract player Aaron Nell from Swindon for the weekend’s games against Belfast and that General Manager, James Pease will again be in the line-up in the games against the Giants.
“I can’t afford to rush the injured guys back too quickly before they are fully fit and although some of them are not far away, they are not quite ready yet. Having Chris, Aaron and James with us this weekend should help us a lot.”
