Excel Hull Stingrays defenceman Stephen Burns insists he will have no hesitation in sticking up for his team-mates - even if it means taking on the Elite League's heavyweights.

In the absence of Adam Knight, the 25-year-old Canadian stepped in to take on Devils tough guy Brad Voth - for the second time this season - after taking exception to Matt Miller colliding with Stingrays goaltender Martins Raitums.

Burns said: "On Sunday with Brad Voth back some of their players all of a sudden thought they were the toughest guys on the planet. Fighting Voth wasn't planned - it was the second time I had fought him this season and both were out of necessity.

"Miller ran our goalie, he is not the smallest guy in the world and should have answered the call. I fought him last year and I don’t know why but he decided to let Voth take care of it instead.

"It was something I had to do and if a situation comes up again which means me defending my team-mates and the club, I will do it. My game is a lot different to Knighter's. A big part of his role is to be the team's enforcer and to step in when things get out of hand. But I do like that part of the game too. I like to hit everyone on the ice and so if I do that I have to back it up."
