Cardiff welcomed League leaders, the Coventry Blaze to the Cardiff Bay Arena for this league clash.

Devils were still without Wes Jarvis, but also missing was Ben Davies and Jamie Hayes on GB duty so called up their ENL top scorer Steve Fisher to slot in on the 3rd line. Cardiff started the game with the momentum as they pressurised looking for the opening goal.

Tylor Michel created a good scoring chance when he drove the net and got his shot away from the backhand, but Peter Hirsch just managed to keep it out. The game seemed to pick up even more pace and chances were developing at both ends, and Cardiff got on the score-sheet first when big defenseman Mike Hartwick sent a shot in from the just before the blue line that Hirsch tipped over the bar – fortunately for the home fans the puck rebounded from the plexi-glass and as Hirsch attempted to catch it, he managed to actually spill it from his glove and over the line for the goal, timed at 9:38.

Max Birbraer put in a big mid ice hit soon after as the game developed a physical edge to it, and a great chance developed for Mark Smith as the puck broke loose in front of the net, but again Hirsch pulled off a very good pad save to prevent the goal. Adam Calder manage to grab an equalising goal at 16:02 when the puck rebounded into his path during a Blaze Power-Play.

Cardiff went right back on the attack and managed to draw a boarding penalty as Brian Lee went in hard on Mark Smith, leaving the Devils with a Power-Play chance themselves at the start of the 2nd period.

Cardiff took full advantage of that Power-Play chance at 20:48 as Jay Latulippe latched onto the end of a pass across the zone by Tylor Michel to slot home and restore the 1 goal lead. Devils stepped the offensive plays then and had and created chances to extend their lead with Birbraer and Captain Brad Voth going close.

Coventry ran into some penalty trouble then as firstly Russ Cowley was called for High sticks, and soon after Jason Robinson went for a delay of game penalty. Devils created a number of chances from the resulting 5 on 3 as Hirsch continued to frustrate the Cardiff shooters as Coventry killed off the Power-Play. At the other end, Stevie Lyle had to be alert to pull of a good glove save as the Blaze got back to full strength. Coventry got their equalising goal at 30:07 when a pass from behind the net caused confusion in the Devils zone and the puck trickled into the net, with the goal credited to Carlson.

Cardiff had another Power-Play chance, and Mark Smith put in the perfect through pass for Brad Voth to one time, but he saw his shot saved well and soon after Latulippe put his 1st time slap shot just wide when Hirsch seemed beaten.

A clash between Devils Brad Voth and Blaze Danny Stewart lead to another Blaze Power Play as Voth was given 2+2+2 for cross checking, with Stewart only getting a 2+2 penalty.

Cardiff managed to kill the penalty but soon after Cowley won a face-off cleanly in the Devils zone and Derek Campbell was able to pick up the puck and finish high into the top corner at 38:10 to give Coventry a 3-2 lead. The Blaze were called for another penalty towards the end of the period for too many men, so Cardiff would again start the period with the man advantage.

The Blaze managed to kill the penalty this time but Devils went close to scoring when Smith went coast to coast and managed to get his shot off, but it was just wide. With just 12:53 of the game remaining the 3rd period sparked into some controversy as Derek Campbell crossed checked Brad Voth into his goalie Peter Hirsch and then proceeded with a further cross check as Voth lay on the ice, having crashed into the netting. This followed a melee behind the net and after some treatment Voth was able to get to his feet.

Voth and Campbell were soon after fighting as a result of the prior incident. Both players were thrown out of the game after the ensuing fight (which Voth won), with the Coventry man getting 5+Game for cross checking, and a Match for fighting, and Cardiff’s man getting a Match for fighting and a 2 minutes instigator penalty. The Devils will now havce to decide whether to take further action, pending video review.

When the game restarted, Brian Lee took another roughing penalty which led to Cardiff having a 5 on 3 penalty chance, which they converted at 50:10 with Max Birbraer slotting home from the point to make the score 3-3. Cardiff then hit penalty trouble themselves but they carved out a great opening as Jay Latulippe got a break away to go one on one, but Hirsch pulled out a good glove save to deny the American.

Two more harsh penalties called against the Devils saw Tylor Michel and Hartwick sitting for 2 minutes to give the Blaze a big 5 on 3 Power-Play chance. However, the Devils defended impressively to keep out the visitors, and as the game returned to 5 on 5 Chambers picked up the pick just inside the Devils zone, managed to cut inside and get his shot off to net the game winner at 57:55. Cardiff pulled Stevie Lyle in the remaining moments of the game, but were not able to get the equalising goal that their play throughout the game deserved, as Cardiff outshot their visitors 2 to 1.
