Cardiff Devils 3 - 5 Nottingham Panthers

Cardiff welcomed Nottingham Panthers to the Cardiff Bay Arena tonight for a league encounter. After a delayed start the game began at a fast pace, with both teams showing high energy levels. It was the Devils that had the first opening though when Matt Miller drove the net hard, forcing a save from Kevin St.Pierre – with Corey Neilson then taking exception to Millers efforts.

Cardiff got the first goal of the night at 7:29 during a power play, Miller picked up the puck by the boards and danced his way past the Nottingham defence to slot home. 90 seconds later (8:59) the Devils doubled their lead when Jason Stone took a slap shot from the blue line that Captain Brad Voth deflected into the path of Max Birbraer, who slotted home on the back post.

The period had a good physical edge to it, and during a stoppage Bruce Richardson decided to taunt the Devils bench – which he probably wished he hadn’t when Gerad Adams then obliged, and the Nottingham player coming off a distinct second best in the ensuing fight. Nottingham got themselves on the score-sheet late in the period from a power play of their own. Cardiff failed to clear the zone and the Panthers managed to put a shot on net, with Marc Levers on hand to slot home the rebound at 17:18.

Nottingham started the second period by a good pad save from Stevie Lyle and this was followed by sustained pressure on the Devils net during a Power Play opportunity which included hitting the pipe-work and some great saves by Lyle.

St Pierre then pulled off a superb double save at the other end to deny initially Miller and then Jay Latulippe with the follow up. At 27:40, Panthers got their equaliser though when Marc Levers was again left with too much time and space to score.

Within 2 minutes Devils were back in front when Birbraer managed to trickle the puck in past St.Pierre at 29:21, but Cardiff were caught out during a line change whilst on a Penalty kill, allowing Sean McAslan to slot home at 31:07. Nottingham had a great chance to get their noses in front soon after, but Wes Jarvis managed to somehow get his stick in the way after a rebound landed kindly for the Panthers. Nottingham however did get their 4th goal - again during another poor Devils line change - which left Jade Galbraith unmarked and able to skate in one-on-one to score. With just 1:07 left of the period, tempers flared as both teams look to get the victory in the 3rd.

Devils stepped up a further gear in the 3rd period as they laid siege on the Nottingham net looking for the game tying goal that their efforts deserved. The momentum was taken away briefly during a Nottingham power play, but Cardiff were soon back pressurising the Panthers’ goal.

With time running out and the Nottingham defence holding on, the Devils called a time out as they went on their own Power Play with 3:15 left of the game. St.Pierre pulled off a great save to deny the Devils during the resulting play, and tempers yet again flared as Corey Nielson tried to goad Brad Voth into dropping the gloves, but the Cardiff captain just ignored the attentions to concentrate on the game. With just under a minute to go, Cardiff pulled netminder Stevie Lyle for the extra attacker, but it was Nottingham who managed to break away and score an empty net goal timed at 59:57, and take the 3-5 win.’s D’Amour was handed a minor penalty in the dying seconds of the game and the points went back North with Neilson’s men.
