Cardiff Devils players and fans joined forces tonight as the big blue tent in Cardiff Bay rocked to victory cheers.

During a dramatic Challenge Cup match Devils powered into a 4-0 lead and produced their best hockey so far this season, writes Terry Phillips - Chief Sports writer of The South Wales Echo.

Then came the drama as Sheffield fought back to 4-4 - and suddenly that first win looked in doubt.

But big D-man Justin Sawyer fired home a winning goal with two and a half minutes left.

It was a thriller of a cup match, full of drama, which finally finished in a way which delighted home fans.

Everybody who was at the clash, as Sheffield suffered their first defeat of the season, must have gone home delighted with the entertainment.

That winning goal certainly left a big smile on Saywer's face - after he had spent the second period break apologising to team-mates.

He took 21 minutes in penalties - giving Sheffield a six-minute powerplay - during the second period - and sparked a Steelers recovery.

Then, after Cardiff Devils had seen a four goal lead disappear as Sheffield made it 4-4, Sawyer smashed home the crucial goal to earn victory.

"The fans were fabulous and stuck with us to the end," said Justin Sawyer. "I'm just so glad things went for me and I was able to score the winning goal after what had happened earlier.

"I took selfish penalties, although I was surprised to be given so many minutes.

"I felt really down when Sheffield scored twice while I was in the penalty box, but the guys were realy good about it and kept my spirits up at a time when I felt bad.

"Then to score the winning goal felt fantastic."

Jon Pelle (2), Ryan Finnerty and Phil Hill swept Devils into a 4-0 lead before Steelers hit back. It was player-coach Ben Simon who pulled a goal back, even handed, on 30-15.

Then, just as Adams' penalty finished, big D-man Justin Sawyer lost his cool and took big penalties.

Sawyer clashed with Simon and referee Tom Darnell handed out harsh punishment - two minutes for a cross-check, two minutes for elbows, five minutes for fighting and two plus 10 for instigation.

Simon's five minutes for fighting handed Sheffield a six-minute powerplay which proved crucial. Jeff Legue and Neil Clark scored while Devils were shorthanded and suddenly, at 4-3 down, Steelers were back in the game.

Cardiff's mood grew worse when Joey Talbot fired in to level the scores on 46-17.

Both teams hit the bar in a big finish and then came the winning goal on 57-38, scored by the man took those penalties which sparked a Steelers fightback.

Sawyer fired home from Stuart MacRae's assist to secure a home victory - Devils first win of the season - and leave Sheffield devastated after they showed outstanding character in their fightback.
