Carlson and Soderstrom return

Thompson brings experienced duo back for further term as Soderstrom and Carlson sign new contracts.

Coventry Blaze Head Coach, Paul Thompson has completed his import contingent ahead of the new Elite Ice Hockey League season, by bringing back two of the club’s longest serving players for a further campaign.

Thirty-three year Swedish defenceman, Matt Soderstrom and thirty-one year old American centre, Dan Carlson have both put pen to paper on new contracts as Blaze look to defend their league title in what is set to be the best Elite League season ever.

Soderstrom will enter his 9th season with the Blaze, having originally joined the club in 1999. The last remaining player from the club’s Solihull days became the first ever overseas player to register 500 games for the club last season and has helped Coventry to win five major titles during his time at the club.

Carlson will enter his sixth season with the club, having made his debut in the 2004/05 Grand Slam winning season. In a Blaze career broken only by one season with Munich in Germany, Carlson has helped the club to win all of its four Elite League titles as well as four other major titles.  In 357 games for Coventry, Carlson has posted a highly impressive 467 points, fourth on the club’s all time point scoring chart.

“I’m really glad to be back again,” said Soderstrom ahead of his wedding in Sweden next weekend. “I love the club and as long as the Coach believes I can do a job for the team, I’ll be here.  I’m certainly not ready to retire yet !  We’ve brought in some great new players and I’m just as excited ahead of this season as I was when I first came over from Sweden.  Playing in the Continental Cup again is something else to really look forward to and I’m as determined as ever to help to club defend our league title.”

“I'm excited to be back for a sixth season with the Blaze,” said Carlson.   “The Blaze organisation has always been great to me and I know coming back, that the goal will be to challenge for more trophies.  Coventry's been a supporting and welcoming home for my family and I over the years so as always we are thrilled to be returning once more.  With the added bonus of the Continental Cup and defending last season's championship there is a lot to look forward to in the upcoming season.”

Thompson confirmed that he is delighted to have the two familiar faces back in the team. “Both Dan and Matty have been a huge part of the success that we have had since we came to Coventry and I’m really happy that they will both be back in the line up next season.  They are two of the hardest working and committed players around and with over eight hundred games for the club between them, they have the vast experience that is invaluable over the course of such a long and high pressure season.

“Dan’s record speaks for itself.  He’s been a prolific point getter for us and I still believe he’s as good as any other two way centre in the country. Matty is still one of the smartest and dependable defensive defencemen around and after his performances last season, he really deserves his new contract. They are two players who know what it takes to win and if you look at their trophy cabinets, they both have been very good at doing just that.”
