The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
After the euphoria of Saturday night's outstanding 7-2 victory of rivals Invicta Dynamos, it was time for part 2 of the biggest weekend in years when the league leaders Wightlink Raiders visited the Riverside. The early signs were that it would be a close game, even more so when it was revealed that Raiders hitmen Jeremy Cornish and Brad Watchorn would not be taking part in the game.
The Raiders took the lead early on through Jason Gorrie, but then disaster struck the Chieftains when defenceman Sean Easton was helped off the ice with a nasty looking knee injury. Late on in the first period and Richard Bentham doubled the Raiders advantage. It was 0-3 at just under the half way mark when Alex Murray capitalised on a defensive error and utilised the space given in front of Ben Clements's net. Less than 3 minutes later and the fightback began when man of the match BT Williams struck a nice goal and on the stroke of the end of the period Ross Brears blasted home a bullet of a shot to end the second 2-3.
The game was tied at 41:25 when Brears and Danny Hammond linked up well for Hammond to slot home past the Raiders netminder. The Chieftains's hearts were almost broken at 56:18 when on a controversial powerplay, the Raiders took the lead and it looked to be the end of that for the Chieftains. However with just under a minute to go, Clements was pulled for an extra skater and when the Chieftains earned a face off in the Raiders zone the large crowd were willing the puck to be put home. The Chieftains won the draw and Wright was able to find Kyle Jones who lifted the puck over Colclough's shoulder and it dropped nicely into the corner of the net and the rink erupted. Chelmsford were able to hold out the last 40 seconds to earn a very credible and hard-fought 4-4 tie.
Next weekend sees the Chieftains head to the Isle of Wight to take on the Raiders in a return match, while on Sunday the Bracknell Hornets come to the Riverside in what should be a powderkeg of a game with fights, physicality and controversy littering the meetings between the two so far this season.
