Chieftains re-sign Dzurko

Chieftains re-sign Dzurko

Rounding out the defensive unit for the Chelmsford Chieftains for the 2010-11 season is Slovakian Rudi Dzurko. Dzurko will be starting his 3rd season in British ice hockey this year, having been a member of the 'Invincibles' team of 2008-09 as well as being a key player in the club's first year in division 1 last season. Dzurko is a tall and solid defenceman who isn't afraid to get stuck in with his size and showed it last season by scrapping twice, once with Ryan Giles of Invicta and later with Steve Fisher of the Cardiff ENL Devils in the playoffs. There have been some calls to change Dzurko and bring in another defensive player from abroad, however head coach Dean Birrell has opted to stick with the tried and tested Dzurko saying

"I can understand why some fans were keen to see changes to our imports this year, however I feel Rudi deserves another chance. He, like Jerry Pavlus, didn't have the best of seasons last year and Rudi knows that himself and doesn't need me or the fans telling him that. He knows he needs to be better on and off the puck this season and I will be looking for an improvement. I know he can be better and he knows he can be and knows he struggled at times last year. I am not afraid of making changes, however I also feel that with the improvements we've made in other areas around the ice, we've made the significant upgrades required to take us to the title. I am looking for the league title and at worst a second place finish. I know that's putting the pressure on me and the players, but there is no point in playing this game without a bit of pressure. I think sometimes the fans expect too much of the players, but they need to remember that we're on a much tighter budget than the days of EPL hockey and the funds aren't always there to make the big changes and bring in the big stars like the club used to. Rudi is a great lad on and off the ice and cares a lot about the team and the shirt he wears on the ice. I am looking for him and the rest of the players to be putting in the big performances every game this season and I want the fans to be loud and proud behind the team at every game".

The 26yr old Slovak learnt his trade with HC Polygón Prievidza and then moved to the UK for work reasons. He turned up to a Chieftains training session back in 2008 and was signed up almost straight away by Birrell and has been a regular player for the Essex side ever since.
