The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
Pancake Day sees you tossing pancakes. Scottish Highland games may see you tossing a caber. What to toss at a Braehead Clan home game a teddy of course! The Braehead based team held a Teddy Toss at the game on the 10th December and received over 450 teddies to donate to local charities and organisations.
For those of you new to hockey or those who have never heard of a Teddy Toss before a teddy bear toss is a popular festive season promotion at Ice Hockey arenas. It is believed that the tradition started in Kitchener, Ontario at Kitchener Rangers games. Some arenas choose to have the toss after the first goal is scored and some at the final buzzer. Either way it’s a great sight and for a great cause.
For the Clan, who are now in their second season, this was their first ever teddy toss and with such a great response it’s definitely something that will become a season event from now on!
The Management team at the Clan hunted round and asked fans to nominate any charities or organisations they felt would be deserving of some of the cuddly toys received.
One of the organisations chosen to receive was Clippens House in Linwood. Clippens School provides education for children aged between 5 and 18 who have additional support needs. Some of the pupils have physical difficulties, are wheelchair users while others have visual impairment, autism and other learning difficulties. Due to the needs of pupils the equipment required is specialist and can be very expensive. They do all they can through constant fundraising while trying to also take the children on trips and days out but spiralling costs don’t always make this possible. So for the Glasgow Ice Hockey team giving just a little in the form of cuddly toys they hope it will bring a smile to some o the schools pupils.
Another to accept donations from the Clan was The Preshal Trust in Glasgow. Preshal tackle the problem of social exclusion in the Linthouse area of Glasgow. The Trust, working with other agencies, provides a wide range of social, recreational and educational activities which enable these issues to be dealt with effectively and help all ages in society.
Also benefitting from Braehead Clan’s tossed teddy donations were Ronald McDonald house, Quarriers, St Vincent’s Hospice, local playgroups, family centre and women’s aid centres.
