Excel Hull Stingrays player-coach Sylvain Cloutier was left “disappointed” after his side lost 4-2 to Belfast Giants at Dundonald in the Elite League.

James Archer, with his third goal in five games, and Konstantin Kalmikov’s 24th marker of the season had given Stingrays a 2-0 lead. But goals from Colin Shields, the league’s leading point-scorer, Graeme Walton – his first of the campaign – Craig Peacock and Tim Cook (powerplay) helped Belfast move to within three points of leaders Coventry Blaze.

Cloutier, who saw Latvian defenceman Aivars Gaisins go to hospital with a suspected broken hand, said: “I am disappointed because we played so well but we got away from the game plan for a few minutes and they capitalised.

“Belfast are a very good side and they are challenging for the title but we gave them a game.  Unfortunately, we made a couple of mistakes and they scored. But I was encouraged by the performance and we will get back to work and get ready for Nottingham on Saturday.”
