Cloutier: Guys need to pay the price
Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier fired out a warning to his Excel Hull Stingrays side after they were beaten 5-0 at home by Coventry Blaze in the Elite League.
Greg Chambers gave Coventry an early lead on the powerplay before quickfire markers from Luke Fulghum and Dan Carlson put the visitors in control. The latter added his second early in the third period and Russell Cowley (powerplay) rounded off the scoring, with netminder Peter Hirsch posting a 37-shot shut-out as Stingrays were blanked at home for the first time this season.
Cloutier, ejected from the game for abuse of official with three minutes left, said: “We have some guys following the game plan and some guys following their own programme. I know everyone is frustrated but you have to follow the game plan, you can’t try and do it by yourself. We are going to have to send a message on Tuesday and make sure everyone is clear in what we have to do. We are not a pretty hockey team and we need to find ways to score goals and get ugly and get to the net and pay the price. We have too many guys on the outside right now not going in. We need to find a way to get out of this. We all need a boost.
“We have to keep our heads up. We are all going to watch the game tape on Tuesday and go through everything and start over again. I thought we did that last week but obviously the message didn’t go in and some guys are going to have to do it or they will get benched. It’s going to be a grumpy week.”
