Cloutier targets points record
Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier has set his sights on helping Excel Hull Stingrays accumulate their highest points total in the Elite League this season.
With five games of the regular season remaining, Stingrays head into tomorrow night’s encounter with Newcastle Vipers at Hull Arena with 35 points.
The highest tally by Stingrays came in their first year in the top flight of British ice hockey when they posted 39 points which has been followed by hauls of 33 and 37.
After the Vipers clash, Stingrays visit Sheffield Steelers on Saturday before ending the league campaign with home games against Newcastle, Cardiff Devils and Steelers.
Cloutier said: “We just want to get as many points as we can and our goal is to eclipse the points total from last season and get past 39 which is the top points total they have had in Hull. We are only four points from equalling the best total they have had in their history. Our goal is to get past that and we have five games left to achieve it.”
Stingrays thrashed Vipers 7-1 in Whitley Bay on Saturday and are tied 3-3 in their series with another home date with the north-east side to come on Sunday.
Cloutier, whose side are seven points behind Vipers, added: “We want to win to try and catch Newcastle but we also know we need help from some of the other teams. We went up to their rink on Saturday and wanted it more than they did. We went to their building and embarrassed them so you know Rob Wilson is going to have his team ready this time.
”They were one of the hottest teams at the start of the season and people were talking about them being in competition for the title. They have some weapons. There is not a weak team in this league and you have to be ready every night. But we have been playing well at home and we hope we can keep that going.”
