Whitley Warriors face two likely English National League contenders this weekend. Mading the journey down to Coventry tomorrow morning, before taking on Blackburn Hawks at Hillheads on Sunday evening (face-off 5.00pm).
Saturday's game could see them up against former Warriors netminder Tom Murdy - who now normally plays for the Midland outfit’s Elite League side - but with regular ENL keeper Josh Nicholls suspended following his sending off in a 10-5 home defeat by Nottingham Lions last Saturday; Murdy is likely to start.
“It will be nice to see Tom again and I’m sure the lads will enjoy playing against him,” said Whitley coach Simon Leach.
“Everyone at is well aware of how good he is and we all know he will very soon be one of the top keepers, and a starting netminder, in the Elite League.
“But our job will be to ensure we find a way past him and just do all the things we would do against any other keeper.”
However, whoever is in goal, Leach is prepared for a tough encounter against an improving side.
“Although we often do quite well there, they are well coached and it has always been a difficult place to go and play,” admitted Leach.
“They are very tight defensively, but we have worked hard this week on our systems specifically for the Coventry game and it is up to us to go there with the right attitude for the full 60 minutes.
“But we have a talented enough team to push them hard and when we put them under pressure and create chances; we have to take them.”
And to complete a difficult weekend for the Warriors, rapidly improving Blackburn Hawks are the visitors to Hillheads tomorrow and the Whitley coach knows his side will have to be at their best again if they are collect the points.
“They are certainly going to be a different side to the one we beat twice in the Northern League pre-season tournament,” Leach continued.
“It was early days for everyone then and they brought in quite a few new players over the summer, so they needed time to gel.
“But Blackburn like to play an open game which could suit us, because we have been very good defensively this season and we can capitalise on any gaps they might leave,” he added.
Leach makes only one change from the side that beat Trafford Metros 7-1 at Hillheads last Sunday, Andy Thornton returning from injury to replace fellow defender Kevin Bucas; who takes a week’s holiday.
Meanwhile, Leach is to undergo six weeks of physiotherapy to try and sort out the injury he picked up earlier in the season, after being diagnosed with an ACL sprain in his knee.
Tickets for Sunday’s Blackburn game - priced at Adults £7, Children & Concessions £5, Family Ticket £19 – are available on the door and with games now starting at the early time of 5.00pm, the Warriors are expecting another big attendance at Hillheads for what should be an exciting encounter.
