Coventry Blaze forward Russell Cowley believes the make-or-break Challenge Cup tie at Nottingham Panthers on Saturday will be a “test of character”.

Blaze head to the National Ice Centre on the back of a 5-1 home loss to Hull Stingrays on Sunday, which left their cup hopes in the balance, and a 7-5 reverse to Edinburgh Capitals in Murrayfield on Tuesday that ended their 12-match winning streak in the Elite League.

Defeat for Coventry would see them eliminated from the cup, which they have won twice in the Elite League era.

Cowley said: “In Edinburgh we made a lot of individual errors in the second period and it wasn’t good enough. We got away from the game-plan and they capitalised.

“Saturday is going to be huge for us and it’s how we bounce back. It is going to be a test of character. If you can’t get up for these games, then you never will.

“Thommo [coach Paul Thompson] will have a game-plan and we have to stick to it. We cannot afford to take a shift off as Nottingham will capitalise. We will have to have our heads screwed on.”

Coventry will then return to Elite League action on Sunday when Braehead Clan visit the Skydome before participating in the Continental Cup in France the following weekend.

Thompson’s side have won both previous encounters with Clan – 2-1 on penalty shots in Glasgow before a 3-2 success at home earlier this month.

Cowley is expecting another tough test and said: “They have a good team and have been holding a lot of teams to one-goal games.

“Getting a couple of wins this weekend will be the perfect way to prepare for France and make sure our confidence is high.”
