Brad Cruikshank scored five times as Coventry Blaze beat Manchester Phoenix 9-8 at the Altrincham Ice Rink to triumph in the Best of British battle.

Following a 4-4 tie at the Skydome last week, a five-goal salvo from Cruikshank – still serving a nine-game Elite League suspension - as well as markers from Luke Fulghum, on his return to Manchester, Greg Chambers, Russ Cowley and Joe Henry ensured victory over the English Premier League side.

Jason Robinson was Blaze’s fourth import while youngster Josh Nicholls played in goal with Tom Murdy away in Belarus with Great Britain Under-20s in the World Championships.

Coach Paul Thompson said: “It was a very open game and very offensive. Young Josh played in net but it wasn’t really a game for goalies. It was another good opportunity for the kids and the two games have proved a useful exercise.

“I have to say I am pleased with the progress they are making. They played well against some of the more established British players who are playing at a higher level so there is a lot of optimism and promise there.”

Coventry are back in action when they take on Hull Stingrays in the Challenge Cup at Hull Arena on Saturday night looking to end a three-game losing streak.
