Mobilx Newcastle Vipers head coach Rob Wilson believes this Sunday’s clash (5.30pm face-off) with the GMB Nottingham Panthers is a David v Goliath battle. The Panthers travel to Tyneside having just flexed their financial muscle with the addition of former NHL 1st round draft defenceman Mario Larocque and Wilson believes this is a prime example of the vast differences between the Elite League rivals.

“Season after season Nottingham put impressive looking rosters together” confirmed Wilson. “In reality they’re streets ahead of any other organisation in the league and have the spending power to put championship challenging teams together every single year. For some reason though they’ve underachieved on many occasions, but right now they are looking very solid and their early season form has certainly been that of champions elect.

“However, just because they’ve a bigger organisation compared to us, I still believe on any given night we can compete with the likes of Nottingham, Sheffield and Coventry. In many ways this Sunday is a David v Goliath battle between the Viper underdogs and the Elite League’s flagship franchise in the Panthers. As I said to the guys last week down at the NIC, despite that we’re a solid team and if we can continue to believe in ourselves we have every chance on Sunday.”

The game could also see the Vipers move further towards the top of the Elite League table if they come away with results against Sheffield on Friday and Nottingham on Sunday. Wilson indicated that this is a huge weekend for the club and urged the clubs fans to come out in force.

“I really do think we’ve got one of our best team’s we’ve ever had in Newcastle right now” said Wilson. “To be in the position we are so early on has given the whole organisation a major boost and has made us confident heading into the remainder of the season. The fans are an integral part of driving the club and team forward and with such a big game on Sunday I really feel they can have a major part to play in the outcome. The atmosphere at the recent game at Whitley Bay against Belfast was one of the best we’ve had since I joined the Vipers, I’d really like to see the fans carry that back to the arena for the remaining games we have there.”

Tickets are on sale now for the visit of the Panthers priced at £13.50 for adults, £10.00 for concessions and £7.00 for under 16’s from the Vipers office on 0191 261 0909 or via www.vipershockey.co.uk.
