Davies needs hernia op

Excel Hull Stingrays forward Matty Davies is still hoping to play a part this season despite needing a hernia operation during the summer.

The 20-year-old missed the weekend Elite League games against Newcastle Vipers and Nottingham Panthers after suffering the problem in the heavy loss to Belfast Giants last Thursday.

He is due to see a doctor today to determine the extent of the injury, with the player keeping his fingers crossed he could perhaps make a return to the line-up for the play-offs.

Davies said: “I am going to see the doctor and he will refer me to the specialist and I have to wait and see what he says. There are only a few weeks left and if he says it’s not going to cause me too many problems I will play but if it’s not worth it I won’t.

"When I discovered I had it on Thursday it hurt a lot, I had to stop playing it was so uncomfortable. The surgery probably won’t be until the end of the season now so hopefully I can be fine for the play-offs."

Regardless of the outcome, Davies - who has posted four goals and 12 assists in 50 games - has been happy with how his first season with Stingrays and at the top level of British ice hockey has gone.

Davies, who along with Stingrays team-mate Craig Mitchell also helped Great Britain Under-20s win gold in the World Championships in Hungary last December, said: "I did not know what to expect when I signed. I just wanted to come in and do my best and show what I can do. I think I have done that in bits. Personally it has gone well for me. I was expecting more from myself. I picked a lot of points up early on, it’s still not bad but you always want more. It’s definitely something to build on.”
