Devils beat Hull Stingrays in League encounter

Cardiff welcomed Hull Stingrays to the Cardiff Bay Arena for their League clash this evening. After a scrappy start to the opening period, the Devils managed to make the 1st breakthrough at 5:49 when Max Birbraer slotted home his own rebound whilst being checked across the zone by the Hull defence. Within a minute Devils had a chance to double their lead when Jay Latulippe linked up well with Matt Miller to set up an opening for Phil Hill, who seemed destined to score but Tommy Sandahl saved well with his pads. Hull finally got going themselves with some pressure and forced a great save from Stevie Lyle, but as the game opened up Devils went down the other end and created an opening for Matt Miller; again Sandahl stood up and saved well.

Cardiff were dealt the blow of losing influential D Man Wes Jarvis, so had to shuffle the lines, with Gerad Adams dropping back onto defence duties, allowing Ben Davis and Jamie Hayes ice time on the 3rd line. With just under a minute left of the 1st period, Stevie Lyle pulled off a great double save to keep Hull out going into the next period.

Devils started the 2nd period with a great chance for Scott Romfo to get on the score sheet, but he shot just wide when it seemed destined he was going to score. That 2nd goal for Cardiff did come soon after though when Matt Towe picked up the puck around the Red line and was able to skate in on net to shoot past Sandahl, goal timed at 22:43. With some neat play between Jay Latulippe and Matt Miller they managed to create an opening for Phill Hill – but just like Scott Romfo at the start of the period, Hill shot wide when he seemed certain to score.

There was a coming together of both player coaches at the midway point of the game after Gerad Adams did not like the Slash that his opposite number Sylvain Cloutier put in. With the Devils unable to capitialise on the resulting power play, Hull managed to break away and ex Devil Jason Silverthorn had a one-on-one chance, but again Stevie Lyle pulled off a great pad save to deny Hull. The momentum then shifted in favour of the Devils as chances fell to both Ben Davis and Tylor Michel as the home team finished the period on a high.

Hull it was that came out of the blocks the faster at the start of the 3rd period, and got themselves back into the game with a backhanded goal by James Sanford at 40:50. With Hull having the momentum now they were pressuring the Devils’ net with regular attacks, one such occasion resulted in Curtis Huppe being sent into the Devils net by Cardiff Capatin Brad Voth. The pressure was eased on Cardiff as Hull took a penalty and Scott Romfo managed to send in a shot from the blue line, which Matt Miller managed to divert into the net to reclaim the 2 goal lead, timed at 48:26.

Less than a minute later, Devils stretched their lead as Mark Richardson jinked his way into the attacking zone and fed the un-marked Max Birbraer on the far post to finish and claim his 2nd goal of the game at 49:11. Hull then took another penalty as Matt Towe was hooked whilst driving into the Hull end with the puck, and this time Phil Hill played a neat one-two with line-mate Jay Latulippe, which allowed the Welsh winger to slot into an empty net at 51:27 as Sandahl found himself dragged out of position by the neat interchange. Cardiff were able to then play possession hockey for the remainder of the period to record a convincing win over the Stingrays.
