The departure of Kyle Bruce to Dundee Stars saddened many Braehead Clan fans earlier this week – but Sunday saw the real emergence of a new hero in Jade Galbraith.

The former Nottingham Panthers man was the marquee signing for coach Drew Bannister in the summer and he’s certainly proving to be a major asset for the club’s push for fourth place, with Galbraith getting four points in a tense penalty shots win over Cardiff.

A hat-trick of goals, an assist and the winning penalty shot meant the Clan were victorious on Welsh soil for the second time this season.

The forward has 76 points in this campaign, made up by 23 goals and 53 assists and had Bannister singing his praises in a match where Galbraith was very much the difference between the two sides.

Bannister said: “Jade just keeps clicking along and keeps getting big goals and earning points for us.

“He’s a wonderful addition to the team and is a leader on and off the ice and proved that again with another great display. I have nothing to say but good things about him.”

While it’s easy to focus on what Galbraith did for his side in this edgy victory, you shouldn’t forget the Clan were actually 3-0 up until they crumbled to allow a 4-3 reverse until the Braehead man fired a leveller to take the game beyond 60 minutes.

What should have been a comfortable victory turned into something hard fought and well earned, but for the 1,444 fans that arrived for the match, it was a classic nerve shredder.

The home side started the stronger, but it was Bannister who put his team ahead, taking Galbraith’s pass and firing past Stevie Lyle in the Devils’ goal at an acute angle.

Then Jordan Krestanovich and Galbraith combined for two late Clan goals in the first period, with the former setting up the latter on both occasions to open a three goal lead.

Inevitably the home side hit back and Jeff Pierce got the comeback underway, before Devils player-coach Gerad Adams started making things nervy with a second early in the third.

Pierce popped up to level, firing home from the right hand side then Scott Dobben put the Welsh side in front, finshing Tim Burrows’ pass from close range to put them 4-3 up.

But Clan weren’t done yet and Galbraith sealed his treble, diverting Lee Mitchell’s pass beyond Lyle and into the net, forcing the game into overtime.

The teams still couldn’t be separated so it was down to the lottery of penalty shots and it was that man Galbraith’s second one that finally sealed the win for the Scots after Kenton Smith saw his second attempt stopped by Suomalainen.

Afterwards, Bannister was pleased with a big road win, but admits he was concerned at the capitulation his team seemed headed for.

He said: “After the first period, we seemed to let them slowly back in. We were able to get a quick one at the end and take it to a shootout.

“I’m not too happy at the goals we conceded, but to travel to Cardiff in bad weather and get the win in their arena is what pleases me most.

“After going 3-0 up then losing the goals we did, particularly the fourth one, we could have packed it in, but we battled hard and the last ten minutes were the best ten minutes we’ve played in the whole game.

“We showed plenty of good character to getting the score back our way, but to lose the goals we did was the opposite.”
