The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
The Warriors had a mixed weekend, but struggled to be convincing after going 4-0 up against Invicta and allowing them to battle back in the third period to 4-3. On Sunday it was worse as promotion hopes were dashed by the Wildcats of Swindon as the team went down 6-3 with 7 different players scoring in the form of Grant Bartlett, Cameron Bartlett, Ben Osborne and Tom Foskett netting on Saturday while Ricky Mills, Robert Manlove and Rory Garrett all scored in Swindon. This leaves Chelmsford Warriors 5 points off second place and the play-offs with just 6 games to go.
While this was happening in Swindon, the Chieftains took on Romford Raiders in a top of the table clash at the Riverside in front of a jam-packed rink with over 1100 fans in for what most hoped would be a memorable game. And it was, for all the wrong reasons for the home side as a disappointing performance saw them go down 5-2 to Romford, leaving them 4 points behind the Raiders with a game in hand. Early on both sides traded powerplay goals with Romford going ahead first through Shaun Yardley, followed up quickly by Danny Hammond scoring his 25th of the season. Both sides were fairly evenly matched for the rest of the period and went into the first break 1-1. The Havering side came out all guns blazing in the second period and in a reversal of the expected playing styles the Raiders were the ones not taking penalties and in doing so ran in 3 unanswered goals through Grant Taylor, Billy Phillips and Juraj Huska to leave the visitors 4-1 up after 2 periods.
There was a flashpoint late in the period when Michael Gray, Romford netminder, felt he'd been impeded by Michael Ranby and the two clashed with players from both sides joining in to create a large scuffle, but the officials didn't call anything and the lid was kept on things.
Into the third and it was the Chieftains who battled hard to get back in the game and were rewarded with a goal from Gary Clarke, who'd go on to get the man of the match award, but any hope of a comeback was thwarted with a late goal from former Chieftains favourite Matt Turner. Danny Cox dropped the gloves with AJ Smith with minutes to go in a one-sided affair and taking a double-minor penalty saw him sit out the rest of the game and the home side play the last few moments a man down.
