Hull Stingrays suffered another disappointing defeat as they went down 4-2 to Cardiff Devils in the Elite League at Hull Arena.

Stingrays, beaten 7-4 in Cardiff in Challenge Cup action last night, welcomed assistant captain Lee Mitchell back into the line-up after a knee injury.

But they fell behind after 130 seconds when Brad Voth netted on the powerplay, with Matti Uusivirta sitting out an interference penalty.

Voth came close to doubling Devils’ lead when short-handed but Stingrays netminder Christian Boucher produced an excellent one-on-one save.

The hosts responded well and in-form Jereme Tendler was denied by Devils goaltender Stevie Lyle, who then pulled off a stunning stop to deny Mitchell a comeback goal.

Jon Pelle hit the post for Devils within a minute of the second period but he made no mistake when he reacted quickest to the loose puck to put his side 2-0 ahead after 24 minutes.

Former Devil Jason Silverthorn halved the deficit with a powerplay marker midway through the period but Sam Smith restored Cardiff’s two-goal advantage shortly afterwards.

Stingrays fell further behind in the 46th minute when Tylor Michel finished well on a breakaway.

Lyle saved smartly from Mitchell and Uusivirta before the former got his goal with nine minutes left – his first of the season – but it was to prove a consolation.

Player-coach Sylvain Cloutier said: “We got out-worked and out-competed all night. We waited until there was about eight or nine minutes left to start working.

“I sat one guy because he was getting out-worked and if guys aren’t going to work they are going to start sitting. Enough is enough now, we have to make this place a hard place to play.

“The game was there for the taking. That was a tired team, they were playing their sixth game in nine days and we looked like the team who were coming off the bus and were tired.

“I am not happy with the weekend at all. We didn’t turn up and that is disappointing.”

Stingrays are back in action on Tuesday night when they take on Nottingham Panthers at the National Ice Centre in an Elite League and Challenge Cup encounter.
