Saturday night saw Cardiff Devils visit Fife Ice Arena, Devils who were in Scotland for a 3 game road trip at the weekend also played Dundee Stars and Edinburgh Capitals. New Flyers imports Denis Kadic and Frantisek Bakrlik make their Flyers debut in front of another big crowd at F.I.A but it was Cardiff who went away with the points after Flyers went down 3-1.

The first period saw Fife outshoot Cardiff but went in 1-0 down after a lapse of concentration which Cardiff took advantage of. “It was one of the only times we got scrambly in the first period and Cardiff pounced on that opportunity, overall we had some great chances in the first period.” Player/coach Dutiaume said after the game.

It was a turbulent match which saw Cardiff Devils Chris Frank ejected from the game early in the 2nd period. Frank was ejected after leaving the bench to seek some retribution on Flyers new boy Bakrlik who went for a 50/50 puck whilst Devils netminder Stevie Lyle was behind the goal. Bakrlik tried to get out the way but the momentum took him in to Lyle. Cardiff Devils Kenton Smith was also assessed a 10 minute misconduct penalty for abuse of the official at the time of the incident.

Flyers found themselves 2-0 down when Cardiff scored whilst Flyers were on a 5-3 Powerplay. “It sucks the life out of you when you concede a 5 on 3 goal and it really had an effect on the bench, and the crowd. We can’t let that happen when we are looking to win hockey games. We didn’t play that well in the 2nd but I spoke in the dressing room and we came back out in the 3rd. We were still a little down and when we pulled the goalie and it went against us.”

Dutiaume was impressed with what he saw from his new players Denis Kadic and Frantisek Barklik. “Denis only briefly got on the ice with us on Friday for an hour after his kit was lost at the airport but he looked nifty and looks like he can shoot. This is a different style of game over here to what he is used to but once he is used to the big ice but we have got to get someone to get him the puck consistently so he can put the puck in the net.

“Frankie has been in this league since the start of the season and we identified him early he was a player we would like. I have said before we lost out on getting him when he left Hull and moved to Coventry. He is a big guy and creates a lot of room. He is happy with the town and has fitted in well with the guys.”

Dutiaume’s focus now switches to Wednesday night when Flyers travel to Braehead arena to take on Drew Bannister’s Braehead Clan. “It is hard at the moment, Dundee and Hull keep dropping points and I am viewing this as a chance for us to catch up, I saw Saturday night as a game we could have got the points from but we were unable. Braehead are a great team and they score goals for fun. They have some top players who are right at the top of the scoring charts. Drew has them playing really solid and Braehead is a really tough place to go. But we have got to view these games as must-wins.”

Fife Flyers return to Fife Ice Arena on Saturday 21st January when they host Coventry Blaze, face-off 7:5pm. The Sky Sports Elite League Highlights Show will also come from Fife Ice Arena with hosts Anna Woolhouse and Dave Simms in attendance for the game.
