The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.
We are working on an archive of matches, stats and players from BIH in the past few years.
A Panther, a Steeeler and two Giants make up the final roster spots to be filled to face the Boston Bruins next weekend. The starting netminders for both the Sheffield Steelers and Nottingham Panthers join the Giants number one, Stephen Murphy as potential starters for the game on Saturday.
Nottingham’s Craig Kowalski has been stellar all season for the Panthers, winning five of his first seven starts including wins over the Giants in the opening game of the season and back-to-back wins over Coventry. Kowalski is an athletic netminder with plenty of experience, and joined the Panthers from Italian side, Valpellice HC, where he played last season. Two years ago he iced 11 times in the AHL for the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League, posting a 92% save rate.
Sheffield Steelers starting netminder, Ervins Mustukovs, has had an amazing start to the season with no less than 4 shutouts in his first 7 games. The Latvian iced in the KHL last season and has spent the majority of his career playing in Latvia, with a brief stint in the East Coast League in North America three seasons ago. So far in Sheffield, he has been very impressive and currently leads the league with the lowest goals against average (1.88 goals allowed per game) and the highest save percentage (93.7%).
On defence, the final spot goes to Belfast Giant Tim Cook, who has started this season where he left off a year ago when he was nominated for the Top Defenceman in the Elite League. So far this year, Cook has scored 4 times added two assists and as usual been one of the most solid defenders in the Elite League.
The final forward spot was originally saved for the Giants Brandon Benedict, but an injury last weekend will see him out for at least the next six weeks, however another Giant has been selected to fill his spot. Mike Hoffman, who has played his way onto the All-Star lineup with an impressive start to the season, will bring size and strength to the line up against the Bruins. Hoffman currently leads the Giants in scoring with six goals and 9 points in 8 games.
These final four selections complete the roster with 3 goalies, 7 defencemen and 13 forwards. The Elite League Selects will train together later this week and finalise the starting netminder prior to the game on Saturday. Belfast Giant Brett Hemingway will train with the Selects Squad as a reserve in case a forward is unable to play on Saturday.
The Boston Bruins match against the Elite League All-Stars takes place on Saturday, October 2nd in Belfast. Tickets are available starting at £40.50. Book your seats now by calling the Odyssey Arena box office on 028 9073 9074 or logging onto www.belfastgiants.com/bruinstickets
