The Guildford Flames ice hockey club have added a former Slovakian national team forward to their roster with the arrival of Lubomir Hurtaj.  The 5’11”, 180lb winger iced in the Slovak Extraleague last season with MHC Martin and Czech Extraleague with VC Vitkovice in short stints while spending the bulk of the campaign with Dukla Trencin back in his native country where he had 6 goals and 12 assists in 24 outings.  After an outstanding jr career with Topolcalny, the 34 year old opened his pro tour with the 1. Liga team from the same city during the 1993-1994 term.  He had his first experience in the Extraleague in 1995-1996 before his first full season at the top level the following year when he collected 41 points in 48 matches with Spisska Nova Ves.  He remained in that league for the next 7 seasons, having his best year in 1999-2000 when he led Trencin in goals and points, tallying 27 goals and adding 29 assists.   He holds a pair of Extraleague championship titles, both with Slovan Bratislava; the first in 2001-2002 and more recently in 2006-2007 when he had 21 goals and 25 assists with the team.

His scoring prowess earned him a total of 55 caps with Team Slovakia.  His national team exposure includes 8 games during the 2000 World championships where he chipped in 3 points in helping his fellow countrymen to a Silver medal haul by reaching the championship game with medal round wins over United States and Finland.

His career has taken him to Wolfsburg Grizzly Adams of the German Elite League, Lausanne in the Swiss League and Helsinki in Finland.  His arrival in the UK will be his first stop outside mainland Europe.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon discussed the roster activity:

“With the news that Vinny Zavoral will not be able to compete for the rest of this season we originally planned to keep an eye on the player market to see who might be available over the coming weeks.  However, the immediate availability of a player the calibre of Lubomir sort of sped up the process of making decisions.  He is a good skater with all the offensive tools and has a proven track record over a very long period of time at some of the world’s top levels, including World championship experience which is as good as ice hockey gets.  He is now in the country, and we are awaiting transfer paperwork approval in time to get him in the line up for Saturday’s game in Manchester.”
