The Flames quest to secure their first ever EPL playoff title began on Saturday when they visited Basingstoke Bison for leg 1 of the aggregate goal ¼ final.  Mark Lee stopped all 32 shots while Nathan Rempel, Milos Melicherik and Rick Plant led the offensive charge with 3 points each in helping their side build a 6 goal lead ahead of Sunday’s 2nd leg thanks to a 6-0 road win.  24 hours later, a 2-2 draw in front of a sold out spectrum crowd made no difference to the overall result as Surrey’s side bagged an 8-2 aggregate win to advance to the playoff finals weekend in Coventry.  Rempel opened the scoring in the first game at 15:48 to give the travellers a 1-0 edge at the first break.  Spectrum’s tenants blew the game open in the middle session with 4 unanswered goals.  Rempel added his 2nd of the night at 21:41.  Stuart Potts extended the lead at 32:18 before Melicherik made it a 4 goal gap at 36:12.  Just over 2 minutes later Plant added the 5th.  Neil Liddiard capped the offensive burst in the 45th minute with the final goal of the night.

In a 6 goal aggregate hole to begin the match, the visiting Basingstoke Bison were desperate for the first score to begin the process of closing the gap but despite 14 shots on the Flames net compared to just 9 the other way it was the home side who opened the scoring when Martin Masa netted in the 14th minute with the only goal of the period.  Former Flame Ollie Bronnimann scored the Bison first of the series when a goalmouth pass ricocheted off his skate to even the match at 25:26.  The Flames re-stored the lead when Nathan Rempel picked up a 120 foot Neil Liddiard pass on the offensive blue line and, with nothing between him and the opposing netminder, slipped the puck under Tom Annetts in the 34th minute.  Just under 4 minutes into the 3rd, a high Bronnimann blast from the left wing eluded Mark Lee to knot the score, but it would be the final goal of the series, ensuring a semi final spot for Spectrum’s men who will take on the Swindon Wildcats on Saturday, April 10th in a semi final at Coventry Skydome with the winner advancing to Sunday’s championship final.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon reflected on the games:

“On Saturday night we were on a mission and the guys came fully ready to deliver on their own promise of making it through to the Coventry weekend.  From the goaltender out we played a solid game in all 3 zones and converted our chances to build what was a very comfortable lead heading to Sunday.  Basingstoke came out hard in the 2nd game and dominated for the first 10 minutes or so, but we managed that very important first goal which in effect extinguished any belief they may have had in making a full comeback to earn the semi final berth.  They have a very good team and they were fully capable of just as easily taking the weekend, but we are pleased we did the job to get another crack at a trophy that we have yet to bring back to Guildford in terms of an EPL playoff crown.  We look forward to getting there and playing our best hockey in hopes of adding a title to the cup win already in our pockets.”
