Milton Keynes Lightning

The Flames visited Milton Keynes to face a Lightning team riding a 7 game winning streak, but a fire on the track brought the train to a halt as the travellers bagged 5 goals plus and empty netter against the league’s stiffest defensive outfit to pull down a 6-3 win.  24 hours later, on home ice, Spectrum’s favourites jumped out to a 3-0 lead against Basingstoke Bison to set up a 5-3 win.

In the weekend closer, Nathan Rempel, who had a ‘Gordie Howe hat trick’ with a pair of goals and a fight, ignited the offence when he finished off a user friendly rebound from a David Savage wide angle shot at 9:58.  About 4 minutes later, Lukas Smital was able to chop a rolling puck on net and the airborne rebound was knocked in by Rick Plant before it hit the ground to double the margin.  Just as the period wound down, David Longstaff held the puck behind the Bison goal before slipping a pass out front to an oncoming Jez Lundin who shovelled a high shot over Dean Skinns for the 3 goal lead at the break.  The Bison hit back in the 2nd, though, by pulling the game to 3-2 in the blink of an eye.  Matt Davies scored on the collection of a loose puck in front of an empty net thanks to a nice Victor Kubenko move to shift Miroslav Hala at 24:20.  Ondrej Lauko added another just over a minute later, but Lukas Smital re-stored a 2 goal lead when he picked up his own rebound and slipped it by Dean Skinns at 28:06.  The visitors replied to that one with an Ollie Bronnimann re-direction that set up a 1 goal game with 20 minutes to play.  To the delight of most in attendance at Spectrum, however, the comeback would never be complete as Rempel counted the insurance goal when he wired a high shot past Skinns on the home team’s only powerplay of the night.

On Saturday, an early Lightning marker by Gary Clarke gave the Bolts a good start in the 7th minute, but a Lukas Smital reply less than 3 minutes later brought the game back even.  At 12:34, Nathan Rempel put the Flames in front for the first time before a Neil Liddiard-Michael Wales fight completed the significant scoresheet alterations ahead of the first break with the slim lead holding up.  At 24:37 the Lightning tied the game through Adam Brittle but David Longstaff countered that one relatively quickly to grab another lead; an advantage they carried to the final session despite a high sticking major penalty to Martin Masa.  Rick Plant doubled the lead at 45:09 before a Matt Towalski strike pulled it back to 1 a couple of minutes later.  The extended margin, and a breath of relief for Flames supporters, was supplied by Smital’s 2nd of the night at 54:44 ahead of a Rempel empty net goal inside the final 10 seconds to keep both teams winless on home ice in 4 head to head games so far this season.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon looked back on the results:

“We needed something big from everyone this weekend after striking out both nights the weekend prior and we got exactly that.  Milton Keynes is by far the most difficult building in which to gain points because they are so good defensively, so for us to deliver under the real threat of dropping 3 on the bounce is a testament to the character of everyone in our locker room.  On Sunday we played a great 1st period and were fortunate to make good on several chances and get a nice lead.  Basingstoke is a great team and they certainly lost none of their will when they came storming back in the 2nd, but we hung tough long enough to allow our offensive strength to come through and get a win.  From goaltending right up to the front lines, we cannot fault anyone for the effort and the contributions they made to getting us a pair of enormous wins to stay pace with the league lead.”
