The hockey season is back, and you can follow it all with us right here on BIH.

The snow and ice around Surrey may have prevented some supporters from turning up at Spectrum on Saturday night, but the Peterborough Phantoms showed up early, netting a 60 footer just over 4 minutes in with a Chris Allen goal to take a 1-0 lead before adding another near the midway point of the opening frame when Tom Carlon fired a loose puck beyond Miroslav Hala. To the delight of the 1200 or so who did turn up, however, the opening pair would be the start and finish of the Phantoms offensive output as the Flames replied with 5 unanswered strikes to secure a 5-2 win. In the Sunday follow up, the Flames travelled to Swindon where they joined the Wildcats for a scoreless 3rd that supported a Martin Masa goal in the period before to allow the Flames to edge the contest by a 3-2 count.
On Saturday, not long after the 2-0 goal, Ben Campbell did most of the heavy lifting with a defensive steal just outside the offensive blue line before turning the play around with a short feed to Nathan Rempel. The Canadian forward worked his way to a shot on goal, the rebound of which Campbell blasted into the net to cut the lead in half. Martin Masa pulled the Flames back level when he bagged a powerplay goal at 30:12. Just 33 seconds later, Lukas Smital finished a 2 on 1 break by picking up his own rebound and depositing it past Stephen Wall for the home team’s first lead of the night. The score held up until just over 6 minutes into the final stanza when Stuart Potts won a clean faceoff in the Peterborough zone and Rick Plant quickly wired it over Wall’s shoulder to double the lead. With time winding down Plant closed on an empty Phantoms net before unselfishly giving up a sure goal of his own; electing instead to feed Smital for an easy tap in to guarantee the outcome
Against the Wildcats, after an opener from Plant at 11:34 put the travellers in front, Ryan Aldridge equalised on a powerplay not much more than a couple of minutes later. In the 18th minute, the Wildcats were awarded a penalty shot and a great chance to nose ahead, but Hala turned aside Jamie Hayes to keep it level. Less than a minute later, though, Edidijus Bauba achieved a Wildcats lead on a powerplay, and they took the advantage to the first break. Nearly 14 minutes into the 2nd frame, Neil Liddiard pulled it back square and a Masa strike in the last quarter of the session offered Spectrum’s men a lead that eventually remained on the clock to close out the evening.
Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon was happy with the points, but felt a bit fortunate that Sunday resulted in a win:
“We did not start out well on Saturday but we did get it together for the bulk of the game. We played pretty tight defensively after the opening goals and created some great scoring opportunities to eventually put up enough offence to generate a win against a good Peterborough team. For the entire weekend we were a bit short staffed with injury and illness so there was some line juggling to be done. We made some alterations on Sunday that we don’t think were as effective as the night before. Swindon played a great game and really could have easily been the winner so on these nights it is pleasing when you do not have your best stuff that you are still able to find a way to get a result. In that regard, although we have some things to look at this week in training, we got the win in a tough building and we now look forward to a difficult road weekend ahead in Manchester and a return trip to Peterborough.”
