The Guildford Flames ice hockey club got back to winning ways on Saturday night using 5 different goal scorers to register a 5-2 win over the Wildcats in Swindon before hosting the Basingstoke Bison on Sunday to finish off a 4 point haul by defeating the Berkshire side 3-2.  In the weekend opener, though, Swindon kicked off the scoring early on when Matt Foord gave them a 1-0 lead less than a minute in.  A Lukas Smital powerplay goal in the 5th minute evened the tally, but the Wildcats got out in front again with a powerplay of their own at 7:53 thanks to Aaron Nell.  Gary Clarke pulled the Flames back square with a shorthanded goal at 14:02 before Rob Lamey netted what turned out to be the winner at 16:45.  Martin Masa doubled the lead just over halfway through the middle session and Rick Plant nailed down the win, and the league table points, with the 5th goal just under 3 minutes from time.

One sundown later, Smital staked the Flames to a good start when he corralled a puck just off the goal, then waited just long enough for Bison netminder Tom Annetts to fall before tucking it home at 6:42.  Not long after that Nathan Rempel joined a pair of teammates on a 3 on 2 break, the Canadian forward elected to successfully shoot it himself to open a 2-0 lead.  There was no further scoring until 27:34 when the Herd cut the lead in half thanks to a Steve Moria strike.   At 51:38 Rempel moved past a defenceman 1 on 1 and received a user friendly bounce as the puck slipped through where he picked it up in time to extend the home side lead to a pair.  Moria got that one back in the 57th minute to set up a nail biter finish, but Spectrum’s team held on for the win and the league table spoils.

Paul Dixon, Flames Head Coach, talked about the importance of getting back to a win as soon as possible:

“We all know that the loss to Peterborough a week prior was hard to swallow because we played so poorly.  You always want to get back to a win as soon as you possibly can, but sometimes that can be tricky because you put a bit of pressure on yourself to make sure the next game is a good one.  When you do that you often open the next game a bit tight which makes it that much more difficult.  In Swindon, in fact, we were a bit nervous to start and it showed with the first 5 minutes or so where we struggled to get it together.  We spotted them an early goal, but fortunately found our composure relatively quickly in reply and gained control of the game.  On Sunday we were all over them in the first period and could have easily had a much wider lead, but they turned up the intensity for the final two periods and it turned out to be a great back and forth match up from which we are pleased to have come out on top.”
