The Flames wrote themselves a science fiction ending in Basingstoke by scoring 3 times in the final period to force overtime before what was technically, if not statistically, Nathan Rempel’s 3rd strike of the night to settle a 6-5 Flames win thanks to a tie breaking penalty shot round.  24 hours later they tacked on a 4-2 win over Slough Jets.  In the opener, a 3-0 period score went both ways on the evening as the home side accomplished the feat to open the affair.  Steven Fisher kicked off the scoring at 2:05.  An expiring 3 on 5 manpower disadvantage for the Flames was costly as Steve Moria put his side up by a pair at 11:51 before he made it 3 in the 17th minute.  A quick pair by the Flames early in the middle session pulled them right back in it when Rempel got his side off the mark at 22:00 before Paul Dixon brought the visitors to within 1 just 35 seconds later.  The first comeback spark was extinguished quickly, however, thanks to an Andrew Hemmings powerplay goal at 26:11 and then another Fisher strike nearly a minute later to re-store the 3 goal margin ahead of the last 20 minutes.  The second comeback effort, however, had more stick.  At 43:55 Neil Liddiard netted the club’s 3rd goal.  At 47:06 a Gary Clarke strike made it a one shot game and then, as time ticked down inside the final 5 minutes, another Rempel goal knotted the score to complete the unlikely turn of events. Neither side could find the twine in the spare minutes so a tie breaking penalty round would make the call.  Rempel’s success stood up as the only goal against all 4 other shooters from either side to secure the Flames win and the extra league point.

Back on the confines of home ice on Sunday night the Flames met up with the high flying Jets who entered the game just a shade off the league lead while tied for the fewest regulation losses of any league member, but Spectrum’s team managed to add one more to that total in the deliverance of the defeat.  The home side picked up an early 1-0 lead when a Jez Lundin shot found its way over the line at 5:53 to represent the only goal of the opening 20 minutes.  At 32:21 Gary Clarke extended the lead to a pair before Milos Melicherik made it 3 just 59 seconds after that to take what seemed like a solid lead to the final session.  The Jets had something to say about the lead’s security, however, outshooting the Flames 14-10 in the 3rd and scoring their first goal at 45:23 through Blaz Emersic.  They continued the pressure and were able to pull the game to within a goal when Jan Melichar made it 3-2 at 54:35. The comeback, though, would fall just short thanks to a final minute Rob Lamey strike to relieve the pressure and seal the win.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon was understandably pleased with the results:

“It is not ideal to spot a team a lead much less a 3 goal margin before the game is finished the first period, but the score by no means reflected the overall play.  We were playing well and were putting a lot of pressure on their side but just could not finish in the early going.   They capitalised on some powerplays to account for some of their success in the first and second, but we felt we held the bulk of the territorial play so heading into the final period we still believed we could pull the game back.  Often it doesn’t happen that way because you do need a bit of luck with scoring and shutting them down completely but we didn’t give up and we got the breaks when we needed them and were rewarded in the end with the win.  It is a good test of this team’s character and they were a valuable pair of points.  Against Slough it was more of a game that we like to plan for by getting a decent lead rather than trying to play catch up.  They have a good side and pushed us to the brink of pulling out their own little 3rd period miracle but we did just enough to keep them at bay before finally putting a bit more distance between us to secure the game.  It is a good weekend for the guys not only in terms of wins but as a confidence boost in our overall capabilities and we hope to be able to continue to play like this more consistently as we head now into the crucial months of December and January”.
