The freezing temperatures and falling snow came close to, but not quite, cancelling Saturday’s Flames match at Spectrum, but for the 1400 or so attendees who braved the elements to take in the game, those in support of the home team at least, the decision to plow ahead was rewarded with a 6-2 win.  Both teams sported short benches as the Raiders arrived with a sizeable injury list while the Flames medical woes continued with Vinny Zavoral, Rick Skene, Martin Masa, Lubomir Hurtaj, Nathan Rempel and David Savage all sidelined for the event.  Rick Plant returned to the line up while Surrey’s team also drafted in Nick Cross to help fill out the roster sheet.  Lukas Smital opened the scoring just beyond the midway point of the first just ahead of a Rob Lamey goal that helped the Spectrum tenants to a two goal lead by the 2nd frame.  The Raiders replied at 27:09 when Danny Marshall cut the lead in half, but a Milos Melicherik powerplay goal in the 35th minute re-stored the two goal lead his team would carry into the final stanza.  At 43:29 Lamey added his second of the night, but Marshall hit back again at 53:54 to pull the score back to 4-2.  Rick Plant answered that one at 57:51 and Stuart Potts added another inside the last 2 minutes to finalise the win.

Sunday’s scheduled match in Bracknell did not fare as well with the Bees complex delaying the fixture as a result of local weather conditions.

Paul Dixon, Flames head coach, was pleased with the win but still concerned with the injury situation:

“It is a very unusual circumstance when you have a very sizeable portion of your line up on the sidelines, yet you are not only continue to play well but are still getting results.  Romford was up for it from the beginning and in the first 6 or 7 minutes we were lucky to have kept the game scoreless.  We finally warmed up a bit after that and got a well timed goal fairly early to relieve a bit of the pressure we were under.  We made a few mistakes later on that are worth a look this week in training, but overall we are pleased with the win and our overall performance.  It is a bit of a shame that the Sunday game in Bracknell was postponed due to weather because when you are winning hockey games you want to continue to play, but on the other hand perhaps a day of extra rest in our current situation is not a bad thing as we get ready for an enormous weekend against Manchester Phoenix home on Saturday before a trek north Sunday.  The gave us a pretty good lesson back in December, but since then we have obviously turned things around a bit and are back in league contention so we hope to be a bit more competitive that we were against them last time out.  Any time you have two teams competing for the top spot you are bound to get an entertaining evening and we look forward to being ready to play the best hockey we can to get a weekend of results that continues to improve our current lot.”
