With just a single outing scheduled for the weekend, the Guildford Flames ice hockey club were hoping to make the most of their only opportunity but could not live up to the task, suffering a 5-3 defeat to the visiting Peterborough Phantoms.

The travellers opened the scoring with the only goal of the first period when a Tom Carlon shot eluded Dean Skinns. In the middle frame, a pair of Flames miscues left Phantom skaters with breakaway opportunities and both resulted in goals as Maris Ziedens extended the lead to two before Brent Gough’s shorthanded high shot made it 3-0.

The home side finally showed some offensive light when Martin Masa netted a shorthanded goal of his own with just 12 seconds on the period clock to leave the Flames deficit at two heading to the final session.  Rob Lamey made things interesting for the home fans when he pulled his side to within a goal at 49:03, but another Phantoms shorthanded marker, this time thanks to Ziedins, re-created a two goal cushion to extinguish any real hope of a complete recovery.

Gough added another just over two minutes later to make it 5-2 before a consolation Masa strike 8 seconds from time completed the evening’s scoring record.

Paul Dixon, Flames head coach discussed a disappointing evening:

"When you play only the one game which is out of the usual schedule you definitely want to make sure you get it right first time because you only get the one shot.  We played a very disappointing game and the right team certainly one on this particular evening.

"We made countless errors of our own making that resulted in far too many outnumbered opportunities in the neutral zone which paved the way to a very large number of quality scoring opportunities for the opposition.  Peterborough, full credit to them, pounced on their chances and got a solid lead that was always going to be a difficult hill to climb, especially with the way we were struggling on the night.

"We need to re-focus this week at training, try as much as possible to put this one behind us and get ready for a trip to Swindon before hosting Basingstoke on Sunday."
