Back to a sold out home ice on Sunday, in follow up to a 6-4 win in Peterborough the night prior, most of the nearly 2100 Spectrum attendees watched with glee as the Flames jumped out to an opening period 2-0 lead before continuing the pressure and eventually running out with a wide shot advantage that translated to a 5-1 win over a short staffed Sheffield Steeldogs.

Lukas Smital began the evening’s offence at 7:53 before a Neil Liddiard goal in the 18th minute set up the margin at the 1st stoppage.  The Steeldogs cut that lead in half with their only goal of the night when Edgars Bebris popped a high shot past Mark Lee at 31:01, but some good puck movement by David Longstaff and Milos Melicherik was capped off by David Savage who ultimately plugged the net with his own rebound just 32 seconds later to re-store the 2 goal cushion.  Marty Masa added another at 35:54 to extend the lead further.  In the final period Masa took a perfect 120 foot pass from Lee before letting a shot go from just inside the offensive blue line to close out the scoring and complete the result.

In Phantom territory, a 3 goal burst in 43 seconds from the end of the 2nd period to the start of the 3rd pulled the Flames out of a 4-2 hole and into a single goal lead that they padded with an insurance goal late in the game to haul down a 6-4 win.  After suffering a loss and a 19 shot deficit a couple of weeks ago in the same building, Matt Towe’s shorthanded goal in the 7th minute was a welcome opening for Spectrum’s team who maintained that 1-0 lead at the end of 20 minutes.  Peterborough bagged 3 of their own to jump in front 3-1.  It took just 17 seconds for James Hutchinson and Tom Carlon to establish a lead for their side around the 26 minute mark.  A couple of minutes later Jeff Glowa extended the margin before a Jez Lundin goal at 32:29 brought the Flames back within 1.  Maris Ziedins added another, this time on the powerplay, to re-apply the 2 goal lead at 36:09, and, as time wound down on the period, it looked like the margin would hold up at least into the final set.  Cue Milos Melicherik and David Longstaff, however, who netted just 24 seconds apart in the final 30 seconds of the stanza to tie the game at the break.  Nathan Rempel gave them the lead only 13 seconds after the re-start before the Canadian forward removed all doubt about the outcome with his 2nd of the period less than 4 minutes from time.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon looked back at a better weekend:

“When you get both wins on a weekend you are obviously going to be happy with the results, but I think what was most pleasing outside the ultimate outcome was that we played solid hockey throughout the two games.  We have had a good season so far, but there have definitely been a handful of evenings when we really fell short of the talent we possess.  This weekend we played a much more sensible defensive game and limited our opposition’s shots and quality scoring opportunities to be in a much better position to win.  We also got the scoring we needed in combination with the stronger defensive effort so there is not much more you can ask from the guys.  We need to rely on league wide results and a bit of luck if we are going to catch Manchester in the league title race, but whether that happens or not is irrelevant to the task of ensuring we are on our game during the last stretch of fixtures.   We need to be playing this type of hockey every night to hold the highest table position we can ahead of the playoffs.  Consistency can be a elusive objective at times, but it is necessary to team success and the goal now is to really have that for what is ahead in the final months of our calendar.”
