Flames have two goal lead

96 hours after suffering a sound home ice defeat to the Slough Jets in league play, the Berkshire based club was back on Spectrum’s pad in the 1st leg of the aggregate goal Cup semi final and a different night made all the difference as Surrey’s team scored 3 3rd period strikes to take a 4-2 win and a 2 goal lead to Slough for leg 2 on March 4th.  The Flames replied to an early Joe Greener goal when a Nathan Rempel shot off a face off eluded Gregg Rockman to even the score, leaving a 1-1 tie ahead of the middle session.  Inside the final 2 minutes of the 2nd, with the only goal of the period, Slava Koulikov put the Jets back in the lead.  The Flames offensive cogs sprung to life in the final stanza.  At 43:13, on the powerplay, Milos Melicherik knotted the score at 2 each.  Martin Masa fired home a loose puck at 52:45 on another powerplay to put the home team in front for the first time before Rempel added another just over 2 minutes later to secure the result and the advantage heading to the closing leg.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon was pleased with the response to a tricky mental climb:

“Taking that loss to Slough just a few days before leg 1 could have been a real problem.  Many times under such circumstances it is difficult to put that behind you and focus on the present, but the guys managed to quickly turn the page and we played a solid game against the Jets to get a couple of goals on them before we meet in their building.  Because the 2nd leg is away in a notoriously difficult building to win, it is key that we do have a bit of a cushion to give us the best possible chance to get back to the final round.  We look forward to seeing them again and putting in the effort required to move on.”
