Bracknell Bees

The Flames scored 4 2nd period goals to take a lead they would not relinquish during a 7-3 win over the visiting Peterborough Phantoms.   A day later, on Bracknell ice, a last minute effort by Nathan Rempel tied the game and forced extra time to help the Flames to a table point, but it was the Bees who secured the bonus offering when Tom Annetts stopped 3 Flames penalty shots while Shaun Thompson scored the only goal of the tiebreaker to help the home team to a 6-5 win.

Inside Saturday’s win was a night of firsts for Spectrum’s outfit.   James Hadfield recorded his 1st win for the team while Neil Liddiard’s 1st goal of the season in the late stages preceded Scott Greenfield’s 1st since jumping to the senior ranks.    Ondrej Lauko put Peterborough out front with the only goal of the opening period at 6:56.  David Longstaff evened the score 35 seconds into the middle frame.  The Phantoms nudged ahead again through Maris Ziedens a couple minutes later, but Jozef Kohut levelled for the Flames in the 28th minute to begin a run of 3 unanswered to close out the session.   Longstaff’s 2nd of the night before the midway point and Rempel’s marker seconds from period time had the home side ahead by a pair with 20 minutes on the clock.  Kohut extended the lead further with his 2nd at 44:15.  The Phantoms got that back through James Ferrera 38 seconds after that, but the late ensuing milestone goals ensured the win.   Liddiard re-stored the 3 goal margin at 56:35 and Greenfield closed out the offensive record 21 seconds later.

On Sunday, Martin Masa posted the initial lead for the Bees less than 6 minutes in.  Rempel replied to knot the score at 1 each before the period was halfway through.  Lukas Smital had the Bees back in the lead just 43 seconds into the middle stanza, but another Rempel goal, this one shorthanded, at 23:32 brought the game back even before the Flames took a 3-2 lead on yet another shorthanded strike, this time by Kohut in the 32nd minute.  An early 3rd period powerplay helped Spectrum’s men post a 2 goal advantage when Greg Chambers netted, but a pair of immediate Bees answers brought the clubs onto even terms.  Thompson pulled his side to within a goal at 43:35 and Peter Jasik made it a full reply on a Bees powerplay 80 seconds later.  The attack continued in the 57th minute when the Berkshire outfit regained a lead at 5-4 with a 2nd Thompson strike to set up what looked like a sure Bees regulation win.  However, with time winding down, and Flames netminder Mark Lee on the bench in favour of an extra skater, Rempel completed his hat trick 28 seconds from time to
salvage the point and force tiebreaking measures.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon looked back at the results:

“We were a bit slow starting on Saturday but we did well to hang in there long enough and finally get things going to get in front and not really look back from that early to middle part of the 2nd.  On Sunday, I felt we were in control, and any time you get yourself into a multi goal lead in the last period in the opponent’s rink you have to find a way to make it work for you.  We didn’t do that.  Perhaps we got a bit too comfortable, but a couple of costly mistakes essentially gave them a couple of goals and suddenly they were riding a major momentum change and they did well to take advantage and eventually get in the lead.  From that standpoint it is a frustrating outcome, but to try and be a bit more positive, we should not forget that we were looking at going home empty handed inside the last minute.  With the net empty and long odds, we managed to score a very key goal that helped keep a bit of a climb up the table so we have to credit the guys for keeping a state of mind under difficult circumstances to still get a bit of a result.  We need to quickly put this weekend behind us and look ahead to a big game at home when Basingstoke stop in Spectrum on Wednesday night.”
