Milton Keynes Lightning

With just a point separating the clubs, and the Flames working to hold the league lead, Spectrum’s team travelled to Milton Keynes Lightning and scored a David Longstaff goal just over 5 minutes into the 3rd period to earn a 6-5 win, and a bit of breathing room in the league’s top spot.   Back on home ice Sunday there was a chance to create an even wider gap at the top of the EPL table, and things looked good for 40 minutes before the Flames relinquished a 2 goal advantage in the final period, giving up 3 unanswered replies in less than 10 minutes to fall just short during a 4-3 loss against Slough Jets.

In the Milton Keynes tilt, Leigh Jamieson put the Lightning in front at 6:32, but a Rick Plant powerplay goal, the first of a hat trick on the night, in the 9th minute evened the score before Nathan Rempel had them up by 1 at the break.  An Adam Carr powerplay marker at 26:02 tied the game at 2.  Plant put his team ahead again not long after that and Matt Towe made the advantage a pair in the 33rd minute, but that was cut to 1 with a Juraj Gracik powerplay goal before the close of the middle frame.  Just 14 seconds after the re-start Jamieson knotted the score at 4 each.  Plant earned his hat at 41:46 to take another Flames lead but a persistent Lightning squad pulled the game back again at 43:59 through Carr ahead of Longstaff’s winner, and a grip on the table top, less than 2 minutes later.

24 hours later, the home side had the only goal of the opening stanza when Greg Chambers converted a powerplay just over 3 minutes in.  Doug Sheppard tied the game up at 28.53, but a goal by Andrew Hemmings in the 31st minute re-stored the slim advantage.  At 36:57, while enjoying a powerplay, Branislav Kvetan opened a 2 goal margin the Flames would carry into the 3rd period.  A few minutes into that final session Joe Greener brought his team back to within a goal.  An Adam Calder strike just beyond the period’s halfway mark knotted the score at 3 apiece then, just seconds later, Adam Greener offered the Jets their first lead of the evening, a lead that turned out to be the only one they would need.

Paul Dixon was disappointed with Sunday’s result, but felt good about the overall outcome of the weekend:

“Saturday was obviously a key game.  There is a lot of pressure on both teams when you enter a game like this where you can either be on top or following the lead depending on the outcome of the match.  I think both teams recognised the value of the points and it is fair to say both sides came to play with that in mind. It was an intense game and I doubt many of the ticket buyers went away disappointed with the desire they saw from either team.  Milton Keynes is a great side, with an outstanding record against us particularly, so in a game where the result could have easily gone either way, we are glad to have travelled home with a bit of space at the top.  Sunday was a great opportunity, with the loss Milton Keynes suffered to Manchester, to really create a spread, and we were nearly there which makes the whole outcome that much more frustrating.  We had played well enough through 40 minutes, but the Jets really dominated that last period.  It is hard to say what happened, maybe we were emotionally spent after the night prior, but they turned it on and we were backpedalling the rest of the way.  They peppered us with shots, converted on some good chances, and we just could not mount a recovery. You have to give them credit.  They are an excellent side and they went out in a difficult spot to start the 3rd and were not going to be denied a win.  As disappointed as we are with that particular aspect of the weekend, we begin this week in a better position than when we ended the last.  We will take it and move on to the next challenge of Manchester who are also closing ranks on the league’s most coveted place.”
