The Guildford Flames Ice hockey club overcame an early case of bus legs and erased a 3 goal deficit in the 2nd period to open the season with back to back wins thanks to a 7-3 victory over Sheffield Steeldogs that was a follow up to the league opener on Saturday when they dealt a 6-3 defeat to the Bracknell Bees.

In the Saturday contest, Ben Campbell opened scoring at 9:58 while shorthanded when he collected a user friendly bounce that worked its way in front of an empty net for an easy tap in.  The Bees found themselves in a bit of penalty trouble after that.  They did manage to weather the resulting pressure, including the successful killing of an extended 3 on 5 disadvantage situation, before they were able to even the score with a buzzer beater thanks to a Peter Jasik goal just as the period timed out. Nathan Rempel put the Flames out in front again less than 2 minutes into the middle frame, but a Ben Duggan reply in the 32nd minute evened the count.  Rob Lamey showed a bit of patience in hanging on to the puck in front of the Bees goal just long enough to sidestep Carl Ambler and tuck the puck in the net for a 3-2 lead at 35:35.  Rempel doubled the lead at 46:38 and Lukas Smital extended the advantage to 3 less than 2 minutes after that.  25 seconds later, though, the Bees hit back with a Michal Pinc goal, but Matt Towe’s first in Flames colours snuffed out any Bees comeback aspirations.

24 hours later the Steeldogs jumped out to the 3 goal spread in the first 11 minutes thanks to goals by Edgar Bebris, Peter Vaisanen, and Mark Turner.  The Flames’ offence sprung to life in the middle frame with another opener by Campbell at 24:33.  Smital cut the deficit to 1 on the powerplay in the 33rd minute before the equalizer found its way off the stick of Jez Lundin at 38:54 to set up a winner take all 3rd.  In the decider, Smital picked up the winner at 46:46.  David Longstaff scored his first as a Flame to extend the lead just 16 seconds later and Lamey capped off the evening with a pair of strikes at 50:11, while shorthanded, and another just over 7 minutes from time.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon discussed the results:

“Exactly a year ago we opened the league season with a pair of defeats so there is no question that reversing that trend is a much better way to get the ball rolling.  Whether you are 2 and 0 or 0 and 2 after the first weekend is in some ways irrelevant because the reality is that you are only a couple of steps into a marathon.  However, the feeling that you started the campaign with a reasonable representation of the potential the roster holds is very rewarding and is a valuable confidence builder in looking forward to the upcoming schedule.  We did make some mistakes across the weekend that will need to be part of our training focus, but overall I was happy with what we were able to do.  We were definitely the dominant team on both nights. We were able to generate significant sustained pressure for good chunks of both matches and that showed with the respective shot counts.  I think we still have a lot of guys just getting settled in so there is a lot of scope for improvement as we move deeper into the season.
