Mark Lee

After recording losses in only 3 games from 26 starts last season, including the netminder of record for 16 of the 17 consecutive wins the club closed out the season with, Mark Lee will return to the side for a 3rd term. The 23 year old posted a nearly 90 save percentage, and a goals against average just under 3, while enjoying an 18 win, 2 loss and 1 overtime defeat league season when he returned to the line up around the midway point fully recovered from major off season surgery.  The 5’11”, 180lb puck stopper also started all 4 playoff games and posted a perfect winning record en route to the club’s first title of that variety in 7 years, all while registering a post season goals against average of 2.25 alongside a save percentage just shy of 92.

Lee joined the side ahead of the 2009-2010 set.  Injury hampered his first efforts at Spectrum, but the Sunderland native still managed more than 1300 minutes and put up a 17 and 7 record with a 92 save percentage and a 2.37 goals against average.  Though the Flames lost on a penalty shot in overtime of the playoff finals that season, he managed a staggering goals against average under 1.5 and a save percentage north of 95 across the competition.  The highlight of his opening year came with the Premier Cup haul when he backed the team to a 10-4, 2 game aggregate win over league champion Milton Keynes Lightning.

In 2008-2009 Lee iced with Sheffield Scimitars, experiencing 656 minutes
while registering a 90 save percentage. He spent the bulk of the previous season with the Romford Raiders where he started 24 games in the late stages of the term, posting a better than 92 save percentage and a 3.08 goals against average.  He developed through his hometown junior programme, taking the ice for his first senior action with the Sunderland Chiefs in 2002-2003 and then Newcastle Vipers a year later.  He appeared with the latter side through 2006-2007.  His most notable production in Vipers black came during his final season at Tyneside when he stepped into 22 outings and came up with a 2.45 goals against average and a better than 91 save percentage.

Paul Dixon was impressed with what he saw after Mark fully returned to the line up:

“We knew at the end of 2009-2010 that Mark had a long road in front of him.  He played through injury to help us win a Cup and very nearly a playoff title.  Surgery was booked immediately following the season and we were aware that he would not likely be ready to start this past term.  Obviously we stocked our line up with that in mind which gave Mark time to get back to full fitness.  When he did, and when he was given the responsibility of heavier playing time, he was outstanding.  You can’t win without good goaltending and Mark is no exception.  He helped us on a real winning role at the back end of the schedule to nearly pull out the league title and he carried it on to help us secure the playoff championship.  At full fitness, and with some solid early career winning experience now under his belt, we expect Mark to carry most of the load this season and we look forward to high calibre goaltending that will help us achieve our objectives.”
