Former Peterborough forward Nathan Rempel celebrates scoring at the weekend courtsey of Alan Bone.
The Flames were back on home ice for the first time in nearly two weeks and posted a lopsided 9-1 win against the Peterborough Phantoms after opening the season 0 and 2 against last year’s champions. After a goal scoring explosion on Saturday night, the early going on Sunday indicated more of the same in Bracknell as a pair of David Savage goals as well as singles by Martin Masa, Rob Lamey, and Nathan Rempel put the Flames to a commanding 5-0 lead en-route to an 11-5 win over the Bees.
Spectrum’s men hit their goal scoring stride early on in the weekend opener with a pair of Nathan Rempel goals; one in the 5th minute ahead of another at 9:16. Just 19 seconds after that, Lubomir Hurtaj bagged his first goal with his new team to put up a 3-0 lead. The offence continued at 11:20 thanks to Martin Masa who extended the early advantage to 4. Inside the first 5 minutes of period 2 the onslaught built momentum with 3 additional home strikes. 46 seconds in, Lukas Smital collected a 100+ foot Jez Lundin pass just as he crossed the offensive blueline; alone on Stephen Wall he made no mistake helping the Flames to a 5-0 lead. Hurtaj added another at 22:44 and a Rempel one time bullet, his hat trick goal, converted a Smital feed to open a 7-0 margin less than a minute later. Not long after that, an apparent Peterborough goal was waived off thanks to an errant goal frame, but they were awarded a penalty shot in lieu. Mark Lee was up to the task for his team, stopping Brent Gough to keep their opponents scoreless before Warren Tait finally got the Phantoms on the board with a goal at 29:19 to pull the gap to 6 ahead of the second break. Rempel got that one back at 49:17 before Masa closed out the game with the 9th just 9 seconds from time to ice the result.
24 hours later Lamey opened the barrage at 5:09. A Savage powerplay goal at 8:32 made it 2-0 before a Rempel goal near the midway mark of the frame and another Savage strike in the 13th minute opened a 4 goal chiasm. Masa added the 5th on the powerplay at 15:11. 6 minutes into the middle session Lamey added another and Lukas Smital continued the attack with a goal just over the halfway point. The Bees showed life just after that, however. Michal Pinc bagged a powerplay goal at 32:21 to cut the gap to 6 and Ashley Calvert pulled his team back to a 5 goal deficit in the 35th minute to take a 7-2 score to the final period. Lubomir Hurtaj tacked on the 8th goal 24 seconds into the final stanza before Rempel made it 9-2 just 28 seconds after that. Jaroslav Cesky replied on the powerplay for the Bees at 48:34 and another Pinc powerplay goal at 51:40 made it 9-4. Nicky Watt added yet another powerplay strike at 52:49 to bring them within 4, but Savage and Rempel strikes, for both of them their 3rd of the evening, inside the final 5 minutes completed the 11-5 win and a 20 goal Flames weekend.
Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon commented on the games and the week leading up:
“It would come as no surprise to anyone that we were very displeased at our results in the two weekends prior when we had a single game each and dropped the outing against Sheffield and a huge game against the Manchester Phoenix. When we returned to training last week, the first order of business was for all of us to take a look around the room to compare the results of our most recent games with the talent sitting in our locker room. We stepped out of our usual training routine a bit in order to stimulate some thought by our entire group regarding our potential in terms where we are and where in reality we could, and probably should, be. We also made some line up adjustments in terms of our combinations and pairings. For whatever reason we got the spark we were hoping for. It is a bit of a coincidence that we happened to have a couple of big scoring games. Obviously we can’t expect that type of offensive production on a regular basis, but we showed a desire to be better than our recent results and that alone is a key part of being the team we know we can be. What we need to do now is take that focus and drive to the ice each and every night out to give us the best opportunity for the success that we know is well within our grasp. We are in a key part of the schedule now and we have a great opportunity to put ourselves back in a much better position and we are looking forward with much more confidence now of doing just that.”
