Adrian Saul

The Guildford Flames ice hockey club have been struggling through the worst injury crisis the club has seen in its entire 18 year history.  After returning Rick Plant to the line up last weekend, and opting for the services of Nick Cross as an additional body, the club still had 6 regulars sit out the most recent match against Romford as a result of injury or illness.  Sure that some of those players cannot play in the very near future, along with no guarantees that any one of those players can return in time for this coming weekend against Manchester Phoenix, the club have agreed a deal to bring 33 year old Canadian forward Adrian Saul into the line up.  The 5’9”, 175lb forward opened this season in Italy before club financial issues forced his departure.  He spent last season with Tours in France where he had 11 goals and 17 points in 19 appearances.  Prior to that he iced 3 stints in Italy; 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 with Merano where he had 32 goals and 56 assists over a 64 game stretch ahead of the 2007-2008 campaign, his best in mainland Europe, thanks to a 27 goal and 76 point term with Appiano.

His stopover in Guildford will not be his first in the United Kingdom, however.  After a 4 year collegiate Career at Elmira College in the United States, the native of Scarborough, Ontario signed on for a pair of seasons from 2002-2003 through 2003-2004 with the Edinburgh Capitals of the British National League.  In 71 games North of the border, he was one of league’s top point getters with 57 goals and 113 points over the two season stretch.

Paperwork allowing, Saul will join the club for training this week and will be available to debut on Saturday at home when the Manchester Phoenix make their first ever stop at Guildford Spectrum.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon discussed the situation and the new addition:

“At the last home match we had 6 rostered non British trained players.  Only 2 of those players were actually healthy enough to join the line up against the Raiders and we are not certain about any returnees for the coming weekend either.  It is a very unusual circumstance.  It requires action if we are going to continue to be successful without grossly overusing the small number of players we do have and causing more injuries simply because we cannot offer enough rest to any player.  The guys who are playing are feeling the effects of short benching it night in and night out and that is a very slippery slope.  It is important that we deepen ourselves that little bit further to help us get through what is an injury run unlike anything we have ever experienced.  We saw Adrian a lot when he was with Edinburgh.  He is an experienced offensive player that will be a valuable addition to our line up. He has put up numbers everywhere he as been and we are looking forward to the impact we believe he will have in some key games ahead as we look to stay in touch with the league’s top spot over the immediate term.”
