The Flames followed up Saturday’s 7-1 home win over Romford Raiders with another victory on the Road in Manchester 24 hours later when they put away 3 2nd period goals then added a pair of unanswered 3rd period strikes to nail down a 6-2 success over the Phoenix.

Tom Duggan opened the scoring in Sunday’s outing at 12:54 but Stephen Wallace hit back in reply for the Phoenix at 17:49 to end the 1st with a level scoreline.  Just over a couple of minutes into the middle frame, Lubomir Hurtaj put the Flames in front and Nathan Rempel made it 3-1, with what turned out to be the game winner, a couple of minutes later.  Ed Courtenay pulled a goal back for the home club at 33:47 but with less than 5 minutes on the period clock Martin Masa gave his side a two goal cushion once again.  Stuart Potts offered the travellers a 5-2 lead in the 47th minute before a shorthanded Masa strike with a little more than 7 minutes remaining removed all doubt about the ultimate result and the direction of the table points.

The night prior, the Romford Raiders visited Spectrum and watched in horror as the home team scored 4 3rd period goals to post a 7-1 win over the Essex side.  Gary Clarke opened the scoring early when he beat Charles Kaylor with a low shot just over a minute in.  Lukas Smital extended the advantage to a pair 28 seconds before the period timed out to offer the Flames a 2-0 lead at the break.  At 32:50 David Savage opened a 3 goal lead, but with just 2 ticks on the period clock the Raiders cut the deficit back to two with a  Jozef Sladok goal.  Tom Duggan answered that one at 45:07 and Rick Plant made it 5-1 not long after that.  Lubo Hurtaj slipped through the defensive net to go in alone on Kaylor before putting up the 6th.  Less than 30 seconds later Rick Plant got his stick on a Ben Austin shot from the blueline on the powerplay to cement the result.

Flames Paul Dixon viewed the results in perspective of a roster returning to full strength:

“For much of the season we have been struggling with injuries and have at times been down to the bare minimum roster strength, especially for a 2 month stretch leading up to now.  Despite that, we had a decent run to hang in there, but now, once some of the recent returnees shake off some of the rust, it will be nice to see what sort of form we can manage as we enter a very busy, key part of the season.  There is no better time for us to get a couple of solid wins behind us to build some confidence ahead of the run into the playoffs and of course the upcoming Cup Semi Finals; a competition in which we desperately want to do well after the disappointment of the final a year ago.  When you put your team together in the summer months you are hoping to build to a point late in the year when you are reaching your potential as a club, but we have not yet really had that chance.  For the most part we have that now and we are excited to be able to put that on the ice in search of the trophies that lie ahead.”
