After 10 consecutive wins to start the new ice hockey season, the Guildford Flames tasted defeat for the first time on Sunday when Slough Jets flew into town and doused the hot run with a 4-2 score.  24 hours earlier on the road, Spectrum’s team brought the winning role to 10 during and an old fashioned ‘barn burner’; netting 3 3rd period goals, including a pair just 14 seconds apart, to recover from a 2 goal deficit and make their only lead of the evening stand up for a 7-6 win over Basingstoke Bison.

The Bison jumped ahead when Ciaran Long put them in front at 4:22.  Martin Masa evened the count at 10:43, but just a few minutes later former Flame Ollie Bronniman inched his side out again to send the Hampshire outfit into the middle frame with the sliver advantage.  A goal barrage early in the 2nd saw the Flames tie the score with a David Savage marker at 22:52, but just over a minute later Ondrej Lauko re-stored the lead.  It was short-lived this time, however, because less than 60 seconds after that Neil Liddiard had knotted things up for the 3rd time.  A pair of Bison strikes less than a minute apart offered them their first multiple goal lead of the evening; Lauko and  Long each scoring their second of the night.  David Longstaff pulled the visitors back to a goal out at 28:22 before the scoring suddenly stopped until early in the 3rd.  Lauko’s hattrick goal re-instated the two goal margin at 42:25, but a pair of Flames goals in 14 seconds changed the game’s complexion once again.  Matt Towe pulled his team to within 1 at 46:13 and Nathan Rempel tied it at 46:27.  The travellers then took their first lead, and ultimately the only lead that mattered, in the 51st minute when Ben Campbell made it 7-6 to secure the odd goal in 13 and the win.

One sundown later, a Scott Spearing goal at 15:11 opened a 1-0 lead.  The Flames tied the score at 1 each thanks to Martin Masa who picked up a short pass before wiring a shot over the shoulder of Greg Rockman at 28:52.  Unfortunately, for the home support, Slava Koulikov collected a loose puck in prime scoring position in the 33rd minute and blasted it beyond the reach of Miroslav Hala to establish a Slough lead once again.  Blaz Emersic doubled the advantage before the period timed out, netting with just 48 seconds on the clock to help his team take a 3-1 gap into the 3rd.   David Longstaff got one back for Surrey’s outfit when he scored at 47:57 but the Jets’ Joe Greener replied with the final goal of the evening at 52:27 to guarantee the result.

Flames Head Coach looked back at the weekend:

“Any time you get yourself on a role, particularly one that lasts for a significant period of time, there is always the shock and disappointment when it comes to an end, but in the back of your mind you always know that as a streak grows you are inevitably moving closer and closer to the point where someone is going to cut the legs out from under you.  We have to be pleased with our first steps out of the gate here so considering the weight that a streak can sometimes put on a player, there is probably a bit of a silver lining in finally removing that added bit of pressure.  As far as the games in isolation go, Basingstoke could have easily taken a win on Saturday, but to give our guys credit we never stopped believing and we pulled one out against a great team in a tough building.    Slough too has a top notch squad, and after they took the advantage we were obviously hoping for a bit of the same magic from the night before, but they would not give an inch.  They are big, strong and very organised.  They took their chances when they got them and earned a big win for themselves.  Probably the key lesson from both games is that we cannot continually be playing from behind because you opportunities for wins diminish greatly and most times, like Sunday, you will not get the fairy tale ending.   It is a good time to have a Wednesday game with the visit here (to spectrum) by Bracknell to see if we can shake off the loss and take a more dominant approach to the game to ensure we dictate events early while hopefully collecting a win.”
