After a 7-1 Flames home win on Saturday over Bracknell Bees, a change in venue for the 2nd encounter between the same two clubs did not change the league table point distribution as Spectrum’s team bagged 6 unanswered middle session strikes and weathered an impressive late Bees rally to slip away from the ‘Hive’ with an 8-6 win.

In the weekend opener, a pair of Flames goals 42 seconds apart just beyond the midway mark of the opening frame opened a gap that would ultimately never be sealed during the 7-1 win.  Nathan Rempel got things going at 10:46 while shorthanded before Lubomir Hurtaj doubled the margin at 11:28.  Adam Bicknell struck back for the travellers in the 15th minute to cut the lead in half at the first break.  An early 2nd period goal by Gary Clarke put up the 2 goal cushion once again.  At 23:08 another Rempel marker opened a 4-1 lead and a Stuart Potts one time shot from relatively close in snuck through Carl Amblers pads at 30:52 to put up the 5th.   Shortly thereafter, a Lukas Smital cross ice goal mouth pass on a 2 on 1 was tapped into an empty cage by Martin Masa taking their team to the final period with a 5 goal advantage.  Tom Duggan added the final goal at 52:03 during a 5 on 3 powerplay to close out the triumph.

24 hours later, Andrius Kaminskas got the only goal of the 1st period when he scored at 15:27 to give the Bees a 1-0 lead to close out 20 minutes.  Jez Lundin replied on a Flames powerplay at 25:59 to even things up.  Adrian Saul put the Flames in front on another powerplay at 26:52 and Martin Masa extended the lead in the 29th minute.  Rick Plant and Nathan Rempel scored around 3 minutes apart near the midway point before another Masa goal just 39 seconds from the 2nd break ensured a 5 goal spread to start the 3rd.  Adrian Saul had the 7th at 43:52, but less than a minute later Michal Pinc picked up the Bees 2nd.  Lukas Smital restored the massive lead at 48:54 before a trio of Bees strikes in less than 3 minutes made a game of it down the stretch. Pinc pulled it to 8-3 at 51:04 during a Bees man advantage while Ashley Calvert cut the margin to 4 at 53:06 before a Terry Miles goal 30 seconds later brought his side that much closer.  At 58:33 Claude Dumas scored yet another to make it a 2 goal game but, fortunately for the Flames, time ran short to end the possibility of a full blow reply.

Flames Head Coach Paul Dixon was pleased with the results, if not the last 10 minutes of Sunday’s outing:

“First and foremost we got the job done as far as the league table points are concerned and considering our results in 4 previous league matches, that is a pleasing weekend on which to launch ourselves into leg 2 of the Cup final on Wednesday.  On Saturday we were clearly the dominant team and I don’t think there was ever much doubt about where we were headed with that one, but Sunday Bracknell stepped it up a couple of paces and we were a bit fortunate to have such a wide margin after 40 minutes.  Thankfully we did, in fact, because we took our eye off the ball a bit with 10 minutes to go and they did a great job of taking advantage and nearly pulling themselves all the way back from what should have been an impossible deficit.  It is a quick turnaround to get ourselves ready for the last leg of the cup so we now turn our attention to the job at hand and hopefully bringing a trophy back to Guildford.”
